I opened my drawers and poured the contents into a bag. “Just be careful, I suppose. I’m not sure whether his parents would be happy knowing you’re playing doctor with their young son.”

“More like nurse and horny patient.” She picked up a hair clip from the floor and passed it to me. “He’s asked me to wear a nurse’s uniform.” A grin touched her lips.

“I take it’s not for professional reasons.”

“Nope. He wants to play out some fucking fantasy. And you know, I would love to do it. I’ve got the right outfit. That short one I wore to a sex party once.”

“A sex party? I don’t remember you telling me about that.” My sister and her seedy little escapades shouldn’t have shocked me at that stage.

“I didn’t tell you because you would’ve freaked. Now that you’re sexually liberated, I can talk to you about these things. Thank God. You’re my bestie.” She put her arm around my shoulders.

“What happened to your nurse pals?”

“Oh, we still hang out. Go out for our wild nights. We went to see a male strip show last week for Bonnie’s birthday. That was a hoot.”

I studied Harriet, as I’d done on numerous occasions. We were so different that it was hard to believe we were sisters. “That sounds like wholesome cheap entertainment.”

She laughed at my irony.

I tied up the bags I’d filled and threw them on the floor next to the boxes. I was almost done.

I gazed up at the Condor. “Lachlan’s out on bail.”

“Have you seen him?”

I nodded and smirked. “He came to the warehouse. Had a pissing contest with Ethan. They don’t like each other.”

“Woo-hoo. My little sis has a couple of sexy hunks fighting over her.”

I shook my head. “That’s crazy. I’m not enjoying it at all.” I exhaled loudly. “I’m confused about Lachlan, though I’ve taken him back. I can’t stay away from him.”

“So you believe he didn’t try to hit on his stepmom?”

“Yep. She’s very skanky, in the skankiest way known to skank-kind.”

Harriet laughed. “Ollie says that Lachlan would never do that.” She turned serious again. “What should I do?”

“Keep the job. Act professionally. And hope he’ll walk again. You’ll win kudos for doing a fabulous job, and life will smile on you.”

“I’m going to miss you, sis.” She hugged me again.

“I’ll probably see you every other day. I’ll still take Ava to dance classes and help where I can.”

“You’re the best. Come on. Let’s order pizza. I’m starved.”

My phone buzzed, and seeing that Lachlan was calling, I picked up. “Hey.”

“Hey, beautiful. What are you up to?” he asked, sounding brighter than earlier.

“Packing.”

“I’m off to the Red House for a jam, and I’m taking Ollie. Do you want to come? He asked me to ask Harriet.”

“Oh. There’s Ava.”

“Bring her. She can stay here at the house. It’s the weekend. The kids can play, and Sherry can drop them off at dance class in the morning.”

“That’s so nice of you and her. Ava loves visiting.”
