She nodded. “You already know your dad told everybody.”

He laughed. “Yeah. Speaking of, how’s everything with your parents?”

“What do you mean?”

“You know…”

“Know what?”

He made a face. “The divorce?”

“What about it?”

Bakari stared at her in utter confusion before he seemed to snap out of it abruptly. “Nothing. Just um…nothing. I don’t know, just talking.”

Her parents had been at each other’s throats for a while, but then it was like a storm passed overhead and took all of the negative energy with it, leaving only clear skies and stillness. But there were no birds chirping, and it wasn’t a happy kind of stillness. It was more…empty. Nobody laughed anymore, and her parents barely spoke to each other at all. And then they finally broke the news a few weeks ago. Divorce. But why would Bakari say, “speaking of?”

“Did you hear about Dr. Gordon?” he said.

“I heard he was in the hospital, but I don’t know the details.”

“Somebody did a home invasion and beat. His. Ass. Like, almost dead. He has brain injuries or something. He ain’t comin’ out of there for a long time.”

Bria said nothing. She wanted to feel good about that, but truthfully, it just made her sad. So much loss and pain had followed them for the past year. She just wanted it to end. For everyone.

“So, Danielle got into Columbia,” she said.

“Yeah, she’s happy.”

Bria looked up and into his eyes. “What about you?”

“Am I happy?”

“Mm-hm.”

“I mean…we knew going in that we’d probably be going our separate ways at the end of the year. It is what it is.”

“Did you know she applied?”

“Nah. Did you?”

Bria shook her head. “She had me thinking she was gonna go off and open a yoga studio or something.”

Bakari chuckled. “Same.”

“I wonder if she’ll ever pick a lane and stick with it.”

Bakari frowned. “That’s your girl, ain’t it?”

“Yeah. I love her, but sometimes I don’t understand her.”

“Me neither. But that’s kind of what makes her cool to be around. She keeps it interesting.”

Bria looked down at the ground. “Can I ask you something?”

“What’s up?”

“Why her? Why Danielle, and not…somebody like me?”
