“I’m excited to announce that I found not only a female to sing with me, but I also think she rivals Dolly Parton. I want to know what you guys think once you hear her. So, without further ado … I’d like to introduce to the stage for the very first time … Hannah Murphy.”

Everyone cheers as Matthew turns to Justine with shock written all over his face, obviously asking questions as to what’s going on. I cover my mouth with my hand, trying to stop my giggles, wishing I could hear what he was asking.

I inhale a deep breath and head out, loving seeing everyone cheering as I appear under the lights.

Tucker begins the song, and just like we practiced, I join in with ease, shocked that I don’t have a nervous bone in my body and feel more at home than I ever have.

Every time I scan the crowd, my eyes catch with Matthew’s, and the way he’s watching me with pure awe makes me feel even more alive.

As the song ends, everyone stands with applause.

Matthew claps louder than anyone else and screams, “That’s my girl up there!”

I can’t help but laugh at his antics before Tucker and I start our next song together.

After the show, Justine and Matthew come backstage to meet with Tucker and me.

I’m flying so high from the adrenaline rush that my cheeks are hurting since I’ve been smiling so much.

Matthew is quick to rush to me. “You were amazing,” he says as he lifts me up and swings me around.

I laugh out loud. “Thank you,” I say through my giggles.

“How did I not know you were going to do that?” he asks.

“I wanted to surprise you,” I reply sheepishly.

“Hey, thanks, Dad,” Matthew says as he hits his arm. “Never in a million years did I think my girlfriend and my dad would keep secrets from me,” he jokes.

“You looked great up there, Hannah.” Justine reaches in to give me a hug, then turns to Tucker. “You weren’t too bad either.” She gives him a kiss.

“We definitely have a star on our hands,” Tucker says as he gives me a hug. “You’re a natural up there.”

“How cool is this?” Justine’s mom says as she walks up with her husband. “So, we’ll have a baseball star and a singer right here from Mason Creek! Both of your futures are very bright.”

I jump with joy. She’s totally right. Until I started singing with Tucker, I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life, but I’ve found it. I definitely need to see where I can take this, especially after performing onstage like that.

Hannah

I’m still riding high the next day when I get a call from Ellie and Leah on a three-way FaceTime.

“How come we had to find out from Leah’s mom that you performed last night at the tree lighting and with Tucker of all people?” Ellie yells into the phone.

“Yeah! Why didn’t you tell us? We would have gone!” Leah matches her tone.

“I’m sorry! I didn’t even tell Matthew. I was so nervous.” I lie down on my bed, holding my phone up, letting the emotions from last night wash over me.

“Well, my mom said you were amazing. I can’t believe we didn’t know you could sing!” Leah says.

“Shoot, I didn’t even know until a few weeks ago. When we were unpacking Tucker and Justine’s house, I started singing along to the radio, and one thing turned into another, and next thing I knew, Tucker was asking me to sing with him.”

“That is so cool. I’m bummed I missed it. You’ll have to perform again, so we can come and cheer you on,” Ellie says.

My face lights up at the thought of getting to perform again.

“Dang, look at her!” Leah shouts. “You’re still flying high. You really loved that, didn’t you?”
