“Yes, I told him you were picking me up, so you have nothing to worry about.”

I buckle my seat belt as he pulls away from the curb.

“I’m surprised he’s not coming to watch. I thought you two were connected at the hip.”

I shrug. “I don’t go to his baseball practices. I figured this was kind of the same deal. He gets to watch the final product, just like I do for him.”

Nate grins my way. “Otherwise known as you’re afraid this will be a disaster and you don’t want him to watch.”

I drop my head back. “Yes, okay? I’m nervous.”

He nudges my arm. “Don’t be. Everyone sucks at first, but we’ll get there. You should have heard the first time Trent and I jammed together. Everything was off, but now, we can pick up anytime, anywhere with any song. It’s kind of cool how well it works actually.”

I inhale a deep breath and nod my head. “That will be us. I just feel it.”

“Hell yeah, it will! When I told my mom about this, she all but told everyone that I was about to become famous because of you!” He laughs.

“Shut up!” I hit his arm playfully.

“We’ll see, but I know people loved your performance, and I can’t wait to hear you sing. You practiced the songs, right?”

“I already knew them all, so we’re good there.”

We pull into Cole’s long driveway and toward his barn, where we’ll be practicing.

Nate puts the truck in park and opens the door, turning to me and saying, “Then, let’s do this,” before grabbing his guitar and amp from the back of his cab.

I take a deep inhale and open the door as so much excitement rushes through me. I feel like I’m stepping into a new world, full of so many possibilities.

“There’s our girl!” Trent yells as we enter the barn.

Cole heads toward us from behind his drums. “Hey, you guys.” He opens his arms wide. “This will work, right?”

I glance around the barn with its high ceiling and hay to one side, but on the other side, there’s a couch set up along with a ping-pong table. It looks like the ultimate man cave.

“This is pretty cool. Thanks for letting us practice here,” I say with a big smile.

“Of course! Nate, I have electricity over here for you to plug into.”

They get their equipment all set up as I sit there, letting the nerves slowly eat at me. My palms start to sweat, so I wipe them down my jeans. I realize I’m standing here with my winter coat still on, so I shrug it off and place it on the couch next to us.

When I turn back around, I try to fake a grin to hide the rush of emotions flooding through me and am even more surprised when Trent holds up something.

“And look what came with my amp!” he says, handing me a microphone. “I completely forgot about it. My mom reminded me that she got it, hoping we’d all do karaoke one day.”

“Oh, great. Now, I’m going to think that’s all this is,” I say out loud and instantly regret it.

“Nah. This is no karaoke. You’ll see,” Nate says.

I grab the microphone and tap it to see if it’s on. When it amplifies my noise, I rub my lips together and say, “Well, it’s now or never. What should we do first?”

“Let’s do ‘Gunpowder & Lead,’” Trent says. “I’ve been practicing that intro, and I think I got it.”

I inhale and nod my head probably more than I should, hoping I don’t look like a complete fool.

“Okay.” Cole sits and once he has the drumsticks in his hands he points to Trent. “You’ll start, and we’ll all go off of your count.”

Nate and Trent grab their guitars and wrap the straps around their bodies as I stand awkwardly in the middle of all of them.
