His words rushed this time and she warmed at his nervous nature. “That would be nice.” One less thing to do today, especially since she hadn’t opened the freezer to take out a package of meat to thaw. “Are you sure about the kids though?”

“Well, I’ve got a few options. I know someone that can babysit if you want to go to dinner alone or should we skip the babysitter and bring the kids with?” He paused for a moment. “I wouldn’t want you to think all I wanted was to do was play scrabble.”

Amber laughed, a refreshing feeling after two days of worry. She liked that he thought of her kids like he did. Understanding that they were her first priority, even ahead of herself and not being jealous. At times, Kevin would be envious or having some blue ball breakdown if she didn’t rush the kids off to bed early when he wanted a little private time. Instead, Mountain was willing to wait, work with her schedule and even share their together time. “It’s up to you. Either way is okay with me.”

“Let’s bring the kids with,” he said. “If nothing else, Maisie will make sure to keep me on the straight and narrow.”

“She does that,” Amber admitted, a bit of pride in the impression she made.

“Very few scare me,” he said. “Especially with milk maid braids, but you raised a mini ball breaker there.”

“What did you do?” she asked.

“Picture it, a kid that may come to my mid-thigh with a mason jar full of cash.”

“I’m getting the visual,” she said. “This kid, cute, adorable and with pigtails.”

“You know this creature,” he said.

“Yes, dangerous, lures you in with a smile right before she attacks.”

“Now, a man, taller, bigger and rarely crossed by grown men offers, I tell you offers, to take said mason jar inside for safe keeping and this kid eyeballs me,” he says continuing his story. “Scans me up and down then informs me she’ll know if I sneak a few bucks.”

“She didn’t?” Amber covered her face to hold in her laughter.

“Then she did the whole two fingers I’m watch you warning.”

“Each time, you brought money in?” she questioned hoping Maisie hadn’t been that crazy.

“Thankfully no,” he said. “Because I’d have had to turn in my patch for having bitch like tendencies.”

“Scandalous.” Amber tilted her head to the side. “You sure you want all three of us at once?”

“If I had a nickel,” he joked.

“Stop,” she bit back. “No really.”

“Callum will protect me,” he said. “Even though he thinks I might be Thor.”

How much had her kids interacted with Mountain? They’d had whole conversations with the man she knew nothing about. Had Kevin ever shared any of his conversations had on his weekends? “Dinner sounds like a fine idea. What time?”

“Let’s make it seven, I’ll pick you up.”

“Okay sounds good.” Amber disconnected the call. A burst of excitement ran through her as she pictured the group of them all going out. Berrington had a few restaurants, she wondered what Mountain was planning for the three of them.

Mountain gaveSpot a few more good rubs before heading downstairs. At some point, he would open up the kitten’s world, but with Creature and Bailey both allowed free reign when they wandered their way to the clubhouse, he needed to have a discussion with the dogs’ owners before he did. Right now, Spot found his room a safe and comfortable place to wander. Sleeping on the windowsill, climbing clothes in the closet and even started trying to figure out the sink. What told Mountain the kitten wasn’t ready for the big world after months of living in the street was when he opened the door to the hallway. Maybe it was the noise, but then again, if he opened his pocket inside his coat, Spot was ready for a ride.

“Spot,” he said.

She lifted her head in demand of an under the chin scratch.

“You’re in charge, anyone tries to come in, cut ‘em.”

She mewed in approval.

He made his way down to the bar then drummed on the bar top to get the attention of whoever was running it early. “Can I get beer Ax?”
