“Thanks for hooking me up with the job. I just stopped by to tell you I decided to not sell my house. I’ll just commute back and forth.” Amber steeled herself. “And it’s Amber, I’m far from Florence Nightingale.”

“Well, okay, but at least let me buy you lunch,” he offered. “To celebrate.”

“Why don’t you buy your woman lunch?” Amber countered. “I remember her from the accident, what was her nickname?”

“Cinnamon? She’s not important to me. You are.”

“Yeah, well I checked my schedule and saw I have too much to do today. I really have to go.” She quickly folded herself inside the driver’s side of the van.

“I can’t change your mind?” Mountain had his hand locked on the top of the door, making it impossible for her to close it and drive away.

“Do you mind?” she said tugging a bit on the door to get him to release before pulling the door shut.

“I can’t believe you’re leaving. What the hell? We had plans.” His voice was muffled on the other side of the door as he ran his hand over the top of his head.

Amber lowered her window. No she didn’t her damn hormones that got caught up in the thick fingers cutting through the sandy blond hair he sported that did it. Damn those fuckers. “Just wanted to tell you I didn’t have time. Go back to your woman. I’m sorry for interrupting you.”

“She doesn’t mean anything, she’s far from my anything.” Mountain’s face reddened and twisted a bit in frustration.

Amber didn’t care. First date or fiftieth, she wasn’t a woman who broke up relationships and those two didn’t have history, they had a current situation. “I have to go.” Putting the van in reverse, she gave it a little gas to get it to back away from the curb.

Mountain held his hands, that had been resting on the top, up in surrender, and stepped back.

Amber was free and clear to leave. Quickly, she shifted to drive and made her way out of the town.

What the hell was she thinking? It had actually hurt seeing Mountain with that other woman. The center of her chest burned and if she weren’t careful, she’d be in tears before she made it out of Turnabout proper. She didn’t want another relationship after the break up with Kevin. Although when they said their vows, she thought it would have been forever his accusations of her being more focused on the children than him had her making it a reality.

Her life ceased to exist in a way, as did any mother’s. Why was it wrong to deal with a crying child before a horny husband? Once one was quelled, the other could be too. The inconvenience? That is what she wasn’t in the mood for. Hearing she’d done something wrong by simply being what he’d asked her to be. A mother. A good mother, one who cared. She swore she could still see Mountain standing in the middle of the street in her rearview right before Turnabout completely disappeared from view as she slipped over the crest and away from the small town.

What ate at her was the fact the man didn’t push. He didn’t demand she put him above all else. They’d been taking it so damn slow, she did ache in parts where she’d closed like a public works project. One with an end date, sometime in the next decade.
