Both men were trying to act chill, but if Ax was anything like Mountain, his stomach was doing flips.

“We have a rescue. It’s a woman and a kid about nine. They’re in South Dakota about midway through. Mountain, I want you to go with Cass and Freaky. This one is a crucial one. The woman’s husband is a real piece of work. It says he is a cop and a dirty one at that. He’ll use force to keep her. While he should be at work when you get there, he’s a cop, which means patrols. Just go in and get her and the kid and get the hell out of there.”

“Sounds messy.” Mountain combed through his beard with his fingers. He was excited they trusted him enough to go on such a crucial rescue.

“Yeah, it’s a messy one. Just get in and get out. Faster you can get to the border, the better off I’ll feel. You might need back roads” Red nodded his head and tapped his gavel. “Any more business?”

“No, that’s it,” Hack announced.

“Dismissed.” Red hit his gavel once again to announce the end of Church. “Details will go to your phones.”

Not exactly the longest meeting of his life, but an important one. Heading to his room, Mountain shot Amber a quick text, saying he’d be leaving for a rescue. Then he packed up a few things, with a quick clean of Spot’s litter box he checked in with Ax about feeding her.

Once back downstairs, Mountain followed Cass and Freaky out to the vehicles. “Let me guess, I’m in the van?”

“You want to ride in this?” Cass asked staring up at the light snowfall.

“Doesn’t bother me,” Mountain said.

“You did ride most of last winter didn’t you?” Freaky asked. “Might be good to have a more nimble vehicle for scouting.”

“Lil’ Mama would kill me if I rode in this,” Cass admitted. “You can take your bike. We have Zoe and Free going with. They’ll be in the van.”

“Might join you,” Freaky said. “I’ve got a few months before Dreamer will kick my ass for riding in shit like this.”

Mounting his bike Mountain prepared to leave. Stuffing his backpack in the saddlebags, he was ready for the trip. It wouldn’t take more than a few days. They would be staying at a few hotels and it was just fine for him. After putting on his helmet, Freaky and he started their engines and got looks from those who’d already winterized their bikes and tucked them away. Glancing down at his phone, he saw a text message from Amber.

Have a safe trip. Be careful.

He texted her back,I will. Thank you.

He waited a few minutes and nothing came back in return. So, he had called her and wished her luck at her new job which she was starting Monday. It wasn’t often they left on a Friday. But they wanted to get to this woman on a weekend when there was a higher chance the man would be on a call, so it was good they were leaving today. With taking backroads to avoid the state police, their travel time for safety reasons would increase.

Lifting his hand, he waved to the few people that sent them off.

Lil’ Mama and Dreamer were waving to their men, though Dreamer had a bit of a scowl, even with Freaky wearing a helmet, gloves and scarf. It was too bad Nightingale wasn’t here with the other Ol’ Ladies to wish him well. She would be someday, he believed it deep in his soul. Being bitten before he understood her fear of what was before her.
