Amber woke up before her alarm and felt a heavy arm across her chest. The warm body told of the Mountain of a man laying behind her. Having spent the night, she smiled suddenly wishing it wasn’t Tuesday. This being a regular thing could be good.

With a good hour before the sun would even rise, she wanted to make breakfast that consisted of more than cereal. Scooting out of bed, to a protested groan from Mountain who seemed to get over it and fall back asleep, she quickly showered and got ready for work, before making her way downstairs into the kitchen and opened the cupboard to find the coffee and filters. Starting the pot to drip she was energized from the smell of the coffee or the soreness between her legs.

Pancakes, sausage and eggs sounded good for breakfast. She quickly prepared the meal and heated up the griddle. She would wait to do the pancakes for when everyone was in the kitchen and seated for the meal. They would be hot that way and it allowed time for the batter to settle.

With scrambled eggs and sausage in the oven on warm, Amber went upstairs to wake up the kids for school. Going into the room where both kids slept, she knelt next to Maisie. Rubbing her hair away from her eyes, “Come on little girl, let’s wake up. Momma made breakfast.”

“Okay. I’m getting up.” She smiled and yawned as she sat up in bed, her eyes closed. “Come on Callum, Mom made food,” she yelled out to her brother.

“Go and brush your teeth, then head to the kitchen I’ll get your brother.”

Doing the zombie walk with hands out to make her way to the bathroom, he daughter moved along.

Amber shook her head then headed for the second mutant in the room. Kneeling by Callum’s bed, she placed her hand on his back and shook. “Come on sweet pea. Momma wants you to get up. You’ve got teeth to brush and hot food to eat.”

“Okay, I’m up.” Sitting up in his bed, he was so cute with messy bedhead. He was her wide open eyed kid, though he was as engaged as the close eyed one. A walking sleep at best he too, yawned and then rubbed his eyes. Turning, he gave her a questioning look. “Why is it dark?” he asked.

“Winter kiddo, it’s here. Dark mornings until probably March.”

His eyes shifted back and forth trying to remember the whole thing from years past, or maybe the day before.

“Come on let’s go,” she said. “You need fuel.”

After both kids brushed their teeth they walked down the hallway past her room and the door opened.

Mountain stepped out in his jeans and Henley with heavy booted feet. Though his cut was still in the room telling her he wasn’t in a rush to leave. “Hi.”

When he caught her around her middle, she didn’t pull away even with both kids staring at her.

“Oh, morning kids.”

“You’re awake.” Amber smiled and placed her hand on his chest. “Come on I have breakfast made downstairs.”

“I’m starving.” Mountain headed toward the stairs.

Maisie snapped. “What are you doing here?” Maisie asked.

“Lose the tone little one. You know how to be nice to Mountain. He had a sleepover is that okay with you?” Amber scolded her daughter. Although it wasn’t exactly the way she had hope to let the kids know what was going on with the two of them, Maisie’s attitude toward her man would need to be set aside. Lord knows she was always welcoming to her father’s friends.

“Did you sleep in my mom’s bed?” Callum asked. “Cuz, Maisie and I sleep in the same room, but mommy got us different beds. She only has one.”

“The best I could,” Mountain said heading down the stairs with Callum at his hip. “You know she steals covers.”

“He slept over,” Maisie said with a raised eyebrow. “Did you kiss him?”

“You never mind about that. Let’s eat.” Amber ushered her daughter down the stairs.

“You kissed him didn’t you?” Maisie accused. “He has a beard, that doesn’t even work.”

Amber was not about to go into the various levels of wrong her daughter was spewing. Even though her body relived the feeling of him kissing along her bare back as the brush of his beard verses lips, all covering most of her at once. Her hand covered her stomach as she caught herself at the bottom of the steps and tried to recover before falling down.

After dishing up the plates, she poured the batter on the hot skillet and soon everyone had a plateful.

“Hey, any chance I’ll get some?” Mountain asked.

Amber turned on her heel to see Callum overloading his pancakes with syrup.
