“I ‘spose,” Callum said and passed the bottle.

Amber mouthed the words ‘thank you’ to Mountain who gave her a wink.

Just as she was about to sit, a knock at the door surprised Amber. She headed toward the door and peeked out to see Kevin. What in the world, was he doing here? Snatching a sweater from the hook, she wrapped herself and braced for the cold morning as she opened the door. “Kevin what do you want? You have work in like a couple hours,” she reasoned and saw the freshly fallen snow would delay any travel and knew she’d need to leave early too.

“I wanted to take the kids to school with you,” he said as she tried to keep the door blocking any inside view. “Are they up yet?”

“Yes, we’re having breakfast,” Amber said. “What did you do? Get a motel room?”

“I wouldn’t have, but as I was leaving town, I thought I need to show you how serious I am about us getting back together.” Kevin’s head turned toward Mountain’s bike pulled up by the curb. “Being a family. We never really did that when the kids were in school. And you work days now, so we could be normal.”

“I have weekend and overnights at this job, when you have the kids,” she said hoping he could see he was violating more than their custody agreement at the moment. “Look, Kevin, this is already upsetting their routine and it’s a very fine line between out the door and missing the first bell.”

A chill shot down Amber’s spine, not wanting the sweet interaction going on in her kitchen to be disrupted any more than it had been.

Once again, Kevin glanced back toward Mountain’s bike and then his hand smacked at the wood door as he opened it wide, barged past her and walked straight back to the kitchen.

Amber trailed after Kevin but it was too late Mountain had stood from the table the moment her ex stepped into the kitchen. Amber shook her head, not wanting a scene in front of the children. Sadly, she knew Kevin could care less about the long term damage the two of them fighting might have on the kids. As much as she wanted to tell Mountain to sit back down, she wasn’t sure how this was going to turn out.

“What the hell is he doing here?” Kevin spewed.

“Breakfast Daddy, do you want some?” Callum smiled as he took a bite of his eggs.

“Who the hell are you?” Kevin snarled.

“That’s Mountain, he stayed up too late so Mommy let him sleepover in her bed like we did in his room at the picnic,” Callum replied.

The innocence of it all warmed Amber’s heart because to Callum, Mountain was his friend. Much like any other kid from school. They played and had sleepovers.

Only the night hadn’t been innocent and Kevin wasn’t a fool. While she had dealt with her feelings about him moving on, Kevin had yet to experience it. Let alone with their kids present.

“This is how you spend your weekdays with our kids. Have strange men staying over. Sorry my switching weekends messed up your chance to be a slut.”

Mountain’s hands fisted and his eyes narrowed.

“What’s a slut?” Callum asked.

Amber pushed Kevin into the living room. Heavy footfalls following her and what she feared was Maisie explaining to her brother exactly what the eight-year-old thought a slut was.

“Maisie, Callum go upstairs and get dressed for school,” Amber called out.

“But I still have pancakes left,” Callum whined.

“They’ll be there when you’re dressed,” Mountain assured him.

Now it was Kevin’s eyes narrowing.

“Don’t,” Kevin warned pointing his finger at Mountain. “That ismyson.”

“I’m aware,” Mountain replied.

“And she’s my wife.”

“Oh, no, no I’m not,” Amber replied.

“This is not going to go over well. I’m taking the kids with me now.”

“No that is not happening.” Amber growled.
