Kendra widened her eyes. “What? Why? When?”

Sarah blinked, and nothing inside her seemed to be functioning as it should because it was as if she was starting a relationship all over again. She hadn’t felt uncertain the first time she’d kissed Kendra, but then she hadn’t realised she had something to lose back then. Now, with their history between them, her heart was on the line. “Because I want to be with you.” She gave an easy smile that belied the tension twisting in her gut. “I’m not going back, Kenny. Even if you don’t want me to stay. I’ll just have to find somewhere else to go. I’m done with politics.” She didn’t feel as brave as she sounded. Being without Kendra was the last thing she wanted, and the thought of it left a hollow feeling in her chest.

Kendra looked around to the sky and ran her hand through her hair. The silence built like a fireball in Sarah’s stomach as she waited for the rejection she didn’t want to hear to fall from Kendra’s lips. The huts were small, and they would be cramped if living together on a permanent basis. What would Sarah do while she was here? How long was she intending to stay? What did it mean for their future? Why hadn’t she called and made proper arrangements? What about what Kendra wanted?

“Please, say something. Anything. I love you and I want to be with you, forever, if possible,” Sarah said.

Kendra touched Sarah’s cheek and stared at her. “I never stopped wanting you,” she whispered. She stroked Sarah’s hair. “I never stopped loving you.”

Sarah trembled. She cupped her hand over her mouth and held back tears of relief and joy. “Oh God. I was so worried. I didn’t dare call you in case you said you never wanted to see me again.”

Kendra shook her head. “I’ve watched the footage of you winning the election a dozen times. I was so proud of you and so close to texting. I should have contacted you. I’ve missed you.”

Sarah took Kendra’s hand and kissed her palm, and the effect in her core was more than it had been before, as if her liberation had unlocked something more precious and potent. The sensation moved through her in tingling waves of longing and need. “I thought I wanted it all, but I realised there was only one thing I wanted: you. I was hurt when I went back, but what you said opened my eyes. I liked who I was here with you. At home, I love my family, but it’s time for me to be me. I did what I had to do for the party, but my heart was here, with you. The victory was hollow without you by my side. But I know that life wouldn’t have worked for us. It would have pulled me away from you and consumed every hour of my day, just like it has done for the last sixteen years, and I didn’t want that for us. It’s always been you, Kenny, ever since you rammed my heel with your bloody scooter.”

“Hey, you jumped in front of me.”

Sarah laughed. “True. If you hadn’t been on the pavement, of course, we would’ve both been spared.” She raised her eyebrows.

“You can’t have a go at me for that now. The London roads are too dangerous.” Kendra shook her head.

“Bumping into you was the best thing that’s happened to me.”

“What are you going to do about your family?”

Sarah took a deep breath. “Everyone’s fine, and they’re already planning to visit.” She held Kendra’s gaze. “I love them dearly, but the children are growing up quickly and are already making their own way. I couldn’t let you go. Mark is happy. I’m happy. And the children are happy. If Abs comes out here, we might not get rid of her.” She laughed.

“Wewouldn’t want to.” Kendra smiled. “So, congratulating you on becoming the PM is a bit too late then.”

Sarah laughed louder.

“What does Jeremy have to say about all this?” Kendra chuckled. “Not that I give a shit, you understand. I’m guessing he’s just snaked his way onto someone else’s patch and will continue to spin his web and spit out venom.”

“Snakes don’t spin webs.”

“He’s a snake and a spider.” Kendra laughed.

“I fired him,” Sarah said and felt the same sense of satisfaction she’d had when she’d given him the news as the results were being counted.

Kendra’s eyes widened. “Wow. Bloody good job, you. That’s proper justice. He deserved it.”

“He did. And you didn’t. But that’s all in the past now. I want to move on, with you.”

Kendra stared at her intently. “You are so beautiful.”

The sparkle in Kendra’s eyes danced with the light, and her smile was bigger and brighter than the midday sun in the snowy Alps. With Kendra was the only place Sarah wanted to be. “Can I sleep with you tonight?” she asked.

“And every night,” Kendra said.

Sarah smiled. “No card tricks though, right?”

“I’ve got a great dice game I could teach you,” Kendra said. She took Sarah’s hand.

“Now you’re talking,” she said, reminded of their poker game and how much fun it had been to lose. She could think of a million ways to get Kendra back.

Kendra started towards the elephant enclosure. “Now though, you have to see this. Have you ever heard elephants talking to each other?”

“No, never.”
