He growls. “The fuck you will.”

I bat my eyelashes again and speak in a deliberately soft voice, “But what if he wanted to meet up to discuss his problems with his wife?”

He snorts. “Yeah, right. He—” He cuts himself off when he finally catches up with what I’m saying. “But Stephanie’s not like that.”

“Are you forgetting I saw you? I saw exactly what she was like.” He frowns but doesn’t contradict me. “Let me ask you this, how did she respond when my name came up? If it even came up.”

He reaches out to touch me, but I take a step backwards out of his reach. “Of course, your name came up. I told her all about you.”

“And I’m sure she was super excited to hear about me.” I’m totally being sarcastic. I’d bet my bottom dollar she didn’t want to hear one single thing about me and tried changing the topic every time my name came up.

“I can prove to you she doesn’t want me.” Oh, this should be interesting. “We’ll do a double date with the four of us. Me, you, Stephanie and her husband.”

What? No! Double dates are the worst. They’re an excuse for women to show off their boyfriends. Nothing more, nothing less. I don’t get a chance to come up with a lie as to why I don’t want to go out on a double date before Aiden has sent a message to Stephanie.

“Good,” he says as his phone dings. “We’re meeting tomorrow night.”

I smirk when I get a brilliant idea. “I’ll agree to a double date if this date happens at McGraw’s.”

Proving he’s a total idiot, Aiden agrees. “You’ve got a deal.”

I nearly rub my hands in anticipation. The uncles are going to have a ball with this.

Aiden’s phone rings. “Shit. I need to go. Work really is busy. I didn’t lie about that.” He kisses my forehead and rushes off.

Suzie bursts in my office. “Awesome. Good idea to make sure you met up at McGraw’s. Now, how are we going to deal with Stephanie?”

I shrug. “I figure my uncles will be all over it.”

“And me.” She points to herself. “I’ll be there as well.”

Normally, I’d tell her in no uncertain terms how she would not be allowed to be anywhere in the same vicinity as my date. In this instance, however, she is most welcome. “Of course. But don’t be too obvious with whatever you’re going to do.”

“Me?” Her eyes widen to comical sizes. “Obvious? Never.”

“Whatever.”

“I don’t have time to stand here and debate with you. I have a background check to run.”

I knew I could count on her!
