Chapter 31

What happened when the soldier went to the enemy’sbar? He got bombed. ~ Text from Hailey to Pops

When I walk into McGraw’s Pub on Saturday night, Suzie is already there sitting with the uncles in their booth. After I greet Pops with a hug and a kiss, I join them.

“It’s Saturday night. Why aren’t you out with your young man?” asks Sid.

“She probably needs a break. Someone had a hot and heavy date last night.” Suzie wiggles her eyebrows and fans her face. I kick her under the table. “Ouch! What?” As if she doesn’t know what.

“Is your young man treating you right,” Lenny grumbles his question.

I roll my eyes. “Just because I call you uncle, doesn’t mean you get to act like an overprotective dad.”

“What about me?” Pops asks as he joins our group. “Do I get to act like an overprotective dad?”

“Like I could stop you.”

He bends over and kisses my forehead. “I like this one.”

“What?” I reach out to place my hand on his forehead. “Are you feeling okay? Someone call an ambulance, Pops has been taken over by an alien.”

“I don’t think ambulances deal with alien abductions. You should probably call Ghostbusters,” Suzie says.

“Call those female Ghostbusters,” Sid adds. “The movie may have tanked, but those ladies were f-i-n-e fine.”

“What did Amy Winehouse have in common with the Ghostbusters?” Barney doesn’t wait for anyone to guess before he supplies the answer. “They both downed spirits.”

“Corny,” I say as I fist-bump him.

Pops clears his throat. “Enough of the wisecracking. I approve of Aiden.”

My mouth drops open. He went from ‘like’ to ‘approve’ in less time than it usually takes him to decide what to order for dinner. “You’re serious. You approve of my boyfriend?”

“The boyfriend she spent last night bumping uglies with?” Suzie can’t keep her mouth shut.

Pops’ cheeks darken but he nods. “Yeah, the guy came into the bar to talk to me.”

I jump to my feet. “What are you talking about? Aiden came here to talk to you?”

“Settle down, Babycakes. He wanted to explain about how he treated you in high school. Apologize for being such an idiot. How he should have stood up for you then and he regrets it now.”

My eyes are about to pop out of my head. “He did what? When?”

“It takes guts to admit you fucked up and own your mistakes. I approve.” He kisses my forehead before reaching behind him and placing a burger in front of Wally.

Wally’s stomach rumbles. “I thought you girls were going to gab all day,” he complains before grabbing his burger and taking a bite. He spits it out and throws it back on the plate. “What the hell?”

Pops laughs. “That’ll teach you,” he says before sauntering off.

Suzie reaches over and breaks off a piece of the ‘burger’. “What is it?” She sniffs before taking a bite. “Mmmm… chocolate.”

Wally pushes the plate her way. “You can have it.” He stands. “I’m going to the kitchen. Carol won’t dare screw with me.”

Barney wiggles his eyebrows. “Oh, she’ll screw with you all right.”

Carol is a great-grandma who’s in her early sixties. She’s also a total flirt who lives to give the uncles a hard time. I love her.

I look over as the door to the pub opens and Phoebe steps in. She’s wearing tight jeans, a blouse, and high heels. Someone took our little talk seriously.
