“He’s involved,” Cody said simply. “We need to know what he knows.”

“And you think he’ll tell you?” Murphy challenged. “Just like that.”

He had dark hair and heavy brows, but a smile that seemed much too jovial for someone in such a serious line of work. Murphy was strong but nowhere near built like the others. He was on the taller side too, but not more than six feet.

Still, there was a deadly gleam to those deep-set eyes that set anyone who looked at him immediately on edge. The best way to describe him would be that he had the charisma of a magician. Maybe even the mystique of one too.

“Alright fine,” he conceded. “I can get you Mathias. Or at least get you to him, that is.”

Santiago, sitting across the table, was the only one who hadn’t touched his drink. “Good. Where is he?”

“Not in town, I can tell you that,” Mathias shrugged. “He’s not even in California, actually.”

“Then whe—”

“What was your brother’s name?”

He was addressing me again. Trying to flash what might’ve been a very charming smile, if I didn’t already know who and what he was.

“Evan,” I replied coolly. “Evan Fletcher.”

His eyes stayed disarmingly locked on mine. I refused to look away.

“And what was the little asshole doing with the Lozanos?”

Asshole? Really?

He was trying to goad me. I choked it down.

“Trying to make easy money, probably,” I shrugged. “I don’t know. He didn’t say.”

“If your brother was with Mathias, he’s most likely dead,” Murphy explained without a hint of tact. “He’s the one guy you never wanna see. Especially when you’re involved with the family.”

“Evan’s not dead,” I protested.

“Oh no?” he challenged. Then, smiling: “And how can you be so—”

“I canfeelit.”

Bryan Murphy’s charming smile broke into a full-fledged, just-as-handsome grin. He laughed jovially as he finished his drink, then shot the empty glass across the table while indicating another.

This time it was Cody who stood up to get another round.

“Your brother was hooked and cooked,” said Murphy. “Wasn’t he?”

My jaw flexed. Eventually I nodded.

“What about you?”

His smile took on a less pleasant aspect.

“No.”

“No?” he chortled. “Not even a little taste here and there?”

“Nothing. Never.”

I could see the others leaning forward, ready to intervene. Very subtly, I motioned them to sit down again. In the meantime, Murphy’s gaze had dropped to my hands, my wrists, my arms. I could see what he was doing. I rolled up my sleeves to give him a full look.
