“Hmm,” he said, almost approvingly. “Good girl.”

His eyes found mine again, where they lingered in an intentionally flirtatious way. I sighed in frustration.

“We’re wasting time,” I said abruptly. “C’mon. Let’s go.”

Cody stood up with me. Silas and Santiago looked confused.

“This guy is playing games. He doesn’t know anything about my brother.”

From his shadowy spot, Murphy laughed. “You think?”

“Yeah,” I snapped coldly. “I think he dragged us out here because he was drunk, or bored, or just needed someone to close this shitty dive bar with. Either way, it’s pretty fucking lame.”

Now it was my eyes holdinghimprisoner. I continued glaring at him, never looking away, until he finally turned his head and laughed.

“I like this one,” he said, raising his newest glass my way. “Where’d you dig her up?”

Santiago looked furious. Cody too. In fact, all three of my paramours seemed ready to rip this guy’s head off.

“Mathias is in Vegas,” Murphy said, matter of factly. “Has been for a few weeks now.”

He flagged down the nearest waitress and lifted the order pad and pen from her breast pocket. His hands moved so swiftly and deftly it was actually shocking.

“Here.”

After scribbling something on the pad he ripped off the page and slid it across the table. Santiago eventually accepted it, although warily.

“That’s where you’ll find him,” said Murphy. “If he hasn’t moved, anyway. Oh, and you’re gonna want to talk to Veronique. She might have some insights about this one’s brother.”

He pointed the pen at me and winked. Before I could say anything else he’d already returned both items to the bewildered waitress.

“You’d better not misstep,” Murphy ordered, this time turning to Santiago. “You know what happens if the Lozanos find out, right? Or if I hear back fromanyonethat you got this information from me?”

Santiago’s lips went tight. He answered anyway. “Yes. We do.”

“Good,” Murphy answered, leaning back in his chair again. “Nice to have never helped you.”

Thirty-Four

BRYNNE

“Come in.”

He’d knocked on the door first, which was silly because it was already open. I was taking my makeup off, washing my tired face. It was almost three in the morning.

Silas slid against me and wrapped his arms around me from behind. I toweled off as his big, powerful hands settled themselves somewhere just beneath my navel.

“So when are we leaving?”

He chuckled and buried his face in my hair. He inhaled slowly, savoring my scent, then kissed my neck so lightly and delicately that his bearded lips barely grazed my skin.

The explosion of shivers felt like fireworks.

“For Vegas?” he eventually replied. “Day after tomorrow.”

“The dayafter?” I questioned.

He nodded.
