“Great,” I chuckled.

“Insomnia.”

“Got that one locked down,” I groaned.

“Restless leg syndrome. Migraines—”

“Migraines?” I winced. “Really?”

“I think so,” Gage offered. “I remember readingsomethingabout them.”

I shifted back into bed, pulling the blankets around me. They felt warm. Comfortable.

“So you’ve been reading about pregnancy?” I asked.

There was a short pause at the other end of the phone. Then: “A little, yeah.”

“That’s cute, Gage.”

“Cute?”

“Very.”

It had been so long since I’d heard his voice, I’d almost forgotten what it was like. The memories came flooding back now, all at once. Along with someothermemories, whether I wanted them or not.

“I just got done riding through the desert,” he said. “Did a lot of thinking. A lot of reflecting.”

“Reflecting on what?”

“All kinds of things,” Gage murmured.

Riding through the desert. Blazing through long stretches of sand, in the middle of nowhere. It sounded amazing right about now.

“So where are you now?” I asked him.

“In my bed,” said Gage. He paused again. “You remember my bed, right?”

A knot was forming, somewhere deep in my belly. A warm knot.

“Umm-hmm.”

“My bed misses you,” said Gage. “It doesn’t smell like you anymore.”

I opened my mouth to speak, then eventually closed it. I just didn’t know what to say.

“Other select parts of me miss you too,” he added.

“Yeah,” I smirked. “I’ll bet.”

Static crackled over the phone’s speaker, as he exhaled a long, close sigh.

“Jules?”

“What?”

“Imiss you.”

The knot tightened. The warmth in my belly spread.
