Just then the door opened, and two large figures stepped through. I raised the gun. Crouching down on the staircase, I pulled my arms in tight to make myself a smaller target…
“Oh my GOD!”
A second later I’d dropped the weapon altogether and was flinging myself down the lower steps and into Devyn and Gage’s open arms.
“What the hell!?”
The guys were overjoyed to see me, but even more shocked and surprised than I was! They kept kissing and hugging and squeezing me tightly, tearing me bodily in and out of each other’s arms so many times that my towel fell to the floor.
“You’re… wet!” Devyn laughed, taking a step back.
“And naked!” Gage noted.
I’d forgotten those inconsequential things entirely, until I saw their gazes both drop to my swollen belly. After that they began handling me more slowly and gingerly, touching my stomach as if it were the surface of a hot stove.
“I won’t break, you know,” I giggled.
Even so they moved with extra care, totally dumbfounded at how much bigger I’d gotten while they were away. Eventually the kissing started all over again, this time coupled with a few naked pinches and grabs that they just couldn’t help.
“You’re reallyhome?” I asked, worried about the answer.
“More than you know,” said Gage.
My gaze swept to the door, which they’d shut behind them. My mouth dropped abruptly open, my eyes going wide.
“M—Maverick???”
“He’s fine,” Devyn assured me quickly. “He’s in San Diego, a day behind us. Still debriefing.”
Warm, blessed relief crashed over me in a giant wave. I hugged them again, twisting back and forth to look at each of them.
“And you’re all good?” I asked, gingerly touching Gage’s face. He had what looked to be wicked road-rash just beneath his chin. “You’re all okay?”
“Better than ever,” declared Devyn. “Especially now thatyou’rehere.”
“Speaking of which,” Gage grinned happily, “whatareyou doing here?”
“Lots of things,” I said proudly. “Lots of awesome, amazing things.”
The house was dim, warm, and welcoming — especially with the fireplace lit, which I kept going every night. It looked almost as if I were expecting them. Prepping the house, to welcome them home.
“Ummm… one more thing,” said Devyn.
I kissed him on the cheek, happily. “Shoot.”
“Was that agunyou were pointing at us?”
I shrugged, trying my best to look innocent. “What answer are you looking for here?”
“The right one.”
“Okay, then yes,” I winced.
Blushing a little, I explained everything. From how I’d shown up trying to surprise them a few weeks back, to sticking around a bit, to staying at their place all the way up until now. I talked about finding Maverick’s gun, and learning how to use it. I even explained how I’d upgraded their coffee maker and watered their plants.
But I never said a word about Phoenix.
“So we walk into what should’ve been a cold, lonely house,” said Devyn, “and insteadyou’rehere. The heat’s on. The fireplace is lit. And you’re naked. Naked and wet.”
