“Oh.”

I took a step back as the couple knocked again, this time even more loudly. Aurelius rolled his eyes.

“I guess we can’t just leave them out in the storm,” he sighed.

“You sure about that?” asked Merrick.

“I mean wecould, he reasoned. “It might make things awkward the next time we run into them at the mailbox, though. Or the driveway. Or at the pool. Or—”

Jace stepped into me, shielding my body with his. He was close enough that I could smell his scent, all virile and strong. Taking my hand delicately in his, he pressed something hard into my palm.

When I opened it, I was staring down at two beautiful wedding rings.

Whoa.

“They’re only gold-plated,” he lamented gently. “And of course the diamond’s not real. Even so…”

He helped me slip them on, and somehow they fit perfectly. The wedding band matched the one Jace was already wearing. Real or not, the engagement ring was absolutely stunning.

“For appearances only,” he said, adding a smile.

The door opened. The neighbors came in, shaking rain everywhere.

“For appearances only,” I winked back, before sliding my arm around him.
