The guys began picking up our stuff, just as my phone rang. I looked down at the screen and froze.

It was my brother Tyler.

My gaze shot straight to Jace, who was busy repacking the cooler we’d had lunch from. I walked a few paces toward the ocean before pressing the green button.

“Hello?”

“SIS!”

Tyler’s chipper voice carried faintly over the sound of the wind. I shielded the phone with my other hand.

“Hey bro. What’s the word?”

“The word is you’re in Hawaii!” he shot back.

Mom.The confusion on my face faded into grim realization.Shit.

“Are you?” Tyler went on. “Or is that just something you told mom to throw her off yourrealtrail.”

I laughed, trying not to make my laughter sound nervous. “No, no. I’m definitely here. In Honolulu.”

“Honolulu?” my brother repeated incredulously. After a short pause. “You know what? Jace is probably there!”

“He is?”

The words came out before I could even think. I was committed to playing stupid now. Stuck in a lie, when I probably could’ve told him the truth.

Or at leastsomeof the truth.

“Yes!” Tyler went on. “I mean the Army’s got him running all over the world, usually. Most times I don’t even know where he’s been until he’s back. But he’s stationed over there, somewhere. I know he’s got his own place in the city.”

“Wow,” I breathed. “I’ll uh, have to reach out to him.”

I took another few steps backwards, watching as the boys departed the beach. Jace shouldered the big cooler. He glanced back at me and I held up one finger.

“Need his number?”

“Umm, sure.”

“You know what? I’ll just shoot him a text. I’ll tell him my sister’s in town, and that I insist he take you out.”

“O—Okay.”

“Not take yououtout though,” he said with a brotherly laugh. “You know, he’s stillJaceand all.”

Jace’s big legs were pumping magnificently through the beautiful Hawaiian sand. My gaze lingered on the curve of his ass.

“I’ll bet he is.”

“Cool,” said Tyler. “Where are you staying?”

I fumbled for a moment, then cleared my throat and gave him the name of the hotel I’d crashed at for barely one night. At this point, I even stumbled over the room number.

“Alright good enough,” my brother said. He let out a jealous sigh. “Hawaii! Damn. And here I am stuck in Lewiston.”

“Lewiston?”

“Yeah,” Tyler confirmed. “The ass-end of New York. We’ve got a three-day tournament here, and our goalie has bronchitis.”
