Jace grabbed the back of my head and pulled me close, pressing my face into one hard, rounded shoulder. I bit down on him as I cried out, grinding him in circles throughout my orgasm.

FUCK!

It felt soooo good! So incredibly, life-changingly good that for a full minute afterward I just stared into his gunmetal eyes, rolling my hips to elicit every last ounce of pleasure while enjoying the beauty of his flawless, ruggedly-handsome face.

“Come…” I whispered softly. “Please, come for me.”

“In a minute,” my sexy soldier countered. His fingers sifted my hair, admiringly. “I’m enjoying this way too much. And besides, there are way too many people at your house.”

I sighed contentedly, then went back to kissing him.

“You know you’re the sixty-ninth guest, right?”

“Ohhh,” he grinned. “Sounds like that should come with some sort of prize, no?”

“Yes. You get to come inside me.”

His hands were on my hips again. They were guiding me faster at times, but also slowing me down periodically, to maintain control.

“Dakota, I need to tell you something.”

My blonde hair bounced about my cheeks, creating two shimmering walls of gold that further separated us from the world. The nagging voice in the back of my head told me that if my mother served dessert without her standard topping, she might literally disown her only daughter. That if Tyler caught wind his sister and best friend had been gone for this long, he might start putting two and two together.

But the other voice — the louder one, coming from deep in my heart — told me the only thing that mattered was right here, right now.

“I love you.”

The words were sweet, beautiful, amazing. Still buried so way up inside me, I thought I felt him swell.

“I love you too,” I whispered.

Jace’s eyes changed. They pierced even deeper, reaching all new levels of intensity.

“No, you don’t understand,” he said softly. “We’vealwaysloved each other, for as far back as I remember. We’re practically family. But that’s not what I’m talking about.”

His lip quivered, which was weird. I’d never seen him do that before.

“Dakota, I’minlove with you.”

The words reached my ears, and for a few seconds they were meaningless syllables. Then the realization hit. It crushed me like a ton of bricks.

HOLY—

I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t get enough oxygen into my lungs to process what he was saying.

Jace…

He was staring back at me expectantly, our bodies still connected yet all but stopped. The car was silent. The world, at a standstill.

Then a giant wave of conflicting emotions crashed over me.

Love.

Our foreheads touched, and an overwhelming sensation of joy surged upward and outward from my core. It made me feel warm. Safe. Ridiculously happy…

“I— I feel—”

He kissed me, and for the duration of the kiss everything else melted away. It was one last chance to bail out. One final opportunity to get off this runaway train, before it ultimately derailed.
