DAKOTA

“Check check check!”

I tapped the mic with a stern finger, listening for feedback. For once there was zero. The walls of my recording studio were up, even if they were makeshift and temporary and still a little experimental. But they weremywalls.Myrecording studio.

For that reason alone, everything was golden.

“We’ll nail it all up when you’ve got everything the way you want it,” said Jace. “Until then though, this ought to do it.”

“Thank you baby.”

I planted a big kiss on his cheek, then laughed as he turned a little red. I guessed he wasn’t used to being called ‘baby.’ He was definitely going to have to get used to it, though.

“The extra soundproofing for the walls should be here in a day or three,” Jace added. “Once they arrive, we’ll stuff and spackle them for you.”

I looked him over, and I was loving what I saw. The tight T-shirt Jace had stretched over his chest was all covered in sawdust. His arms were pumped from carrying lumber and hammering and all sorts of other good things.

“Stuff and spackle, huh?” I teased. “Sounds dirty.”

“Not as dirty as blown insulation,” he countered.

“Blown, huh?”

God, I was such a horndog! Then again, I was pretty sure the guys had made me this way. Sure, I’d had a fairly big libido even before our legendary trip to Hawaii, but after a whole month of living alongside the guys I was starting to talk like them. Act like them.

“There should be enough power with the outlets you have in here,” Jace offered. “But if we need to run new ones, we can.”

“Sounds good,” I smiled. “Wouldn’t want ablownfuse, would we?”

Finally he was catching on. “Hmmm,” he smiled. “We might, actually.”

I debated dropping to my knees right there. If I weren’t already late, I would’ve.

“Well then,” I cooed, gliding my hand over him promisingly. “Later on tonight, we’ll have to check into that.”

I gave him a squeeze and a kiss, then spun away and bounded down the stairs. Merrick was already in the truck, with the heat running. I jumped in, kissed him as well, and together we took off in a shower of gravel and spinning tires.

“You sure it’s ready?”

“Oh, it’s ready,” Merrick smiled. “I double-checked.”

“Because four days ago they said it would be ready ‘tomorrow’, and then they said two more days, and then—”

“It’s ready,” my lover assured me again. “Because if it’s not, trust me, I’m taking something else.”

I squeezed his hand happily, all the way to the dealership. Getting rid of my old car wasn’t something I thought would be hard, but it turned out to be quite sentimental. Rather than drive the old girl another thousand miles to an all new altitude she probably wouldn’t agree with, I’d sold her and used the money as a down payment for the one thing I’d always wanted.

“There!”

My Jeep was parked right in front of the lease office, looking shiny and new and freshly detailed. Although it was a few years old, the previous owner had garaged it. She’d kept the mileage down, too.

“It’s got wheels and everything,” Merrick joked, as we rolled to a stop.

“That’s nothing,” I said. “Just wait until I start customizing it.”

I could see it in my mind’s eye: a push bar up front, a light bar across the top, complete with a full rack of LED floodlights. Maybe even one of those corny wheel-covers in the back that said ‘Jeeps are for Girls’.
