He nods, his lips pressed into a thin line.

The nurse leaves, and a heaviness settles over the four of us.

“We should go.” Sasha stands, pulling Channing up with her. “We’ll see you back at the house,” she says to Bexley.

“Actually, I think I’m going to stay here tonight.” He glances at me, pleading with me, his eyes saying all the things I’m not sure I want to hear.

He’s sorry.

He loves me.

He’s here for me.

He’ll protect me.

But I just feel numb.

“No,” I say. “You should go with them.”

Bexley

Istare at Mia with my chin dropped and my fists clenched in frustration.

"Can you both leave, please?" I instruct Sasha and Channing, but at no point do I take my eyes off Mia's tired ones.

The sound of their shoes squeaking against the floor soon rings in my ears before the door opens and then closes behind them.

The silence is almost deafening. The only things that can be heard are the whir of the IV machine Mia is still plugged into and our increased breathing.

"You don't mean that," I tell her.

She holds my eyes strong, the darkness within them making me wonder if I'm staring at the same person. Mia might have been apprehensive about what the future held before, terrified even. But at least she was full of fight, determination. All of that has gone. Vanished. And all because of him.

"Yes, Bexley. I do."

"No, it's just the drugs they're filling you with," I argue, beginning to feel myself getting desperate.

I can't leave her alone here.

What if… What if he comes here?

Q might not be able to find him, but something tells me he hasn’t gone very far. They're just not looking fucking hard enough.

They have already been outwitted by him once; you'd think they'd be embarrassed for it to happen again, but right now, we're all just sitting ducks, waiting for him to strike.

"I need you to leave, Bex.Please." Her voice is hard. Cold. It's not a tone I've ever heard her use before, and I hate it.

He did this to her. He fucking corrupted her innocence, her strength and zest for life, all because he needed revenge on something that has nothing to do with her.

Her dad? Fine. Q? Definitely. But not Mia. She's innocent in all of this.

"I'm not leaving you alone. It's not happening." I take a step toward her, and my heart shatters when she flinches away from me as if I'm going to hurt her. "Mouse?" I breathe, unable to speak through the giant lump in my throat. "I'd never hurt you."

Her eyes shutter as she inhales through her nose. "Then you can do as I ask and leave."

I never saw her hand move, but two seconds later, the door behind me opens and the nurse steps into the room once more.
