“Come on, it isn’t like that and you know it.”

“I just need…” A deep sigh escapes my lips. “I just need it all to stop.”

“Maybe you should speak to a doctor. They can—"

“Please, Sasha,” I plead, not caring how desperate I sound. “I need this. Just something to take the edge off.”

“Bexley will kill me,” she murmurs.

“This isn’t about Bexley,” I argue. He’s not my keeper. I’m not sure what he is anymore.

I felt it though, yesterday morning when he pushed me up against the stone wall of the church. The connection between us. It’s still there, simmering. It would have been so easy to let him in.

But I couldn’t do it.

When we got back to the house, I’d locked myself in my room for the rest of the day, avoiding everyone. Including Annabel, who has been calling and texting nonstop since I got out of the hospital.

I have nothing to say to her.

Not a damn thing.

“Fine,” Sasha says, pulling me from my thoughts. “Xanax will help you relax, but only take it at night, okay?”

“Thank you.” I nod, relief seeping into my bones.

Just then, footsteps sound on the stairs, and a second later, the guys spill into the kitchen.

“Remind me again why we told Mulligan to take this morning off?” Brandon says, making a beeline for the refrigerator.

Bexley hovers in the doorway. I peek over at him, letting my eyes run down his body. He’s all sweaty and breathless, as if he just got done working out. Channing is the same. He gives Sasha a heated look, and for a second, I think he’s going to go to her. But she shakes her head, glancing at Brandon.

Right. They still haven’t told him. Or the rest of the Electi, for that matter.

It seems keeping secrets is all par for the course where Quinctus and the Electi are concerned.

Grabbing my coffee, I make to leave, but Bexley blocks the door. “We need to talk,” he says grimly. “All of us.”

Chairs scrape against the tiles as everyone gathers around the table. I sit closest to Sasha, at the end so no one can sit on the other side of me. Bexley waits, grabbing some juice from the refrigerator before joining us.

“Q wants it business as usual tomorrow. We attend class, show a united front, and tamp down any rumors.” His eyes flick to mine. “If anyone asks, Cade is out of town visiting family.”

A bitter laugh crawls up my throat, and everyone looks at me. “We’re protecting him now?”

“No, we’re not protecting him. We’re—"

“There are rules for a reason, Mia,” Tim says.

My brows knit together as disbelief coats my voices. “Rules? Q can go fuck their rules,” I hiss, surprise registering on his face at my outburst. “Where were—”

“Mia.” Bexley breathes my name like it hurts him to say it.

“Seriously?” I shoot upright. “You’re on their side now?”

“I’m not… this isn’t…” He lets out a frustrated breath.

“She should know,” Tim says, and my eyes snap to his.

“I should know what?” There’s no disguising the tremor in my words. Whatever is about to reveal itself isn’t good. Trepidation snakes through me.
