“Seriously?” She bats his chest. “Keep talking, Jagger, and you’ll be sleeping alone tonight.”

“Like you could keep me out.” His eyes glint with something that looks a lot like a threat, but Hadley doesn’t seem worried. In fact, she melts against him and kisses him.

I drop my gaze, turning into Bexley slightly.

“You want to get out of here?” he whispers, staring at me with hunger in his eyes.

“I… I can’t.”

Dejection washes over him.

“I’m sorry.” The words form on my lips, but he’s no longer looking at me.

He’s looking past me.

My heart is heavy as I stand. “I’m going to lay down for a little bit.”

“No, Mia, stay,” Hadley says, tearing her mouth from Cole’s. “We’re sorry. It’s… hard to stop ourselves sometimes.”

“I bet it is,” Alex grumbles.

“Watch it, Rexford,” Cole spits. “You might be family, but it doesn’t mean I won’t kick your ass—”

“Cole!” Hadley rolls her eyes. “Please, stay. We can toast marshmallows and make s’mores.”

“Maybe later,” I say, inching away from them.

Bexley drills holes into the side of my face, but I don’t meet his intense stare.

I can’t.

“See you later.” I hurry inside, releasing a long breath the second I’m alone.

“Get it together,” I scold myself.

Bexley brought me here to get space from Gravestone, from everything that’s happened… but there are some nightmares you can’t outrun.

Grabbing a glass of water, I head to my room. It’s right next to Bexley’s. I saw the reluctance in his eyes when I asked for my own, but he respected my wishes.

Because he loves me.

I feel it every time his eyes find mine. But there’s a wall between us. A wall scratched with pain and anger and fear.

Digging the small baggie out of my purse, I pop a pill, washing it down with water, then lay down on the bed and stare up at the ceiling. I know Bexley meant well, bringing me here, but there’s no quick fix for the gaping hole in my heart.

Slowly, the tension leaves my body until my eyes grow heavy and the darkness edges closer…

“So innocent,” he snarls. “When we all know you’re anything but.” He spears two fingers inside me, pain lancing through me. I cry out, but it sounds muffled, everything growing distorted around me.

Cade covers me with his big, imposing body as he keeps working his fingers inside me. “Your father is a murderer, Mia. Q’s assassin. He could have taken me out any number of times to save you from this fate… yet, he didn’t. He let things play out just the way Q wanted them to… and do you know why?” He stares down at me with fire in his eyes. “Because he’s weak. But I’m not weak, and I’ll show them. One by one, I’ll show them that they picked the wrong guy to manipulate.”

Tears stream down my face as I thrash beneath him. He backhands me out of nowhere, my head thumping against the hard ground, stars exploding in my vision.

“No, please… don’t. God, no!” I buck wildly against him, the icy fingers of fear wrapped around my throat.

“You’re mine now, little mouse,” he sneers, his breath warm against my cheek.

“No, no,” I cry, but it’s futile. He’s too strong, and I’m too out of it to fight him off.
