“Mia?” a voice calls out.

“Bexley?”

“Come back to me, baby. Please, come back—”

“Bexley?” My eyes fly open, my chest heaving as I try to drag air into my lungs.

“It’s okay, you’re safe. You’re—”

I bolt upright, shaking violently. “He’s here. Cade is here.”

“He’s not here. It was a dream.”

“It was?”

It felt so real…

“You’re safe.” Bexley hugs me to his chest. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you.” He cups the back of my neck possessively, pressing a kiss to my hair.

“No,no!” I shove him away. “He was here…”

“No one knows we’re here, Mia. It’s just you, me, Hadley, Cole, and Alex. It’s safe—”

“Stop saying that. Stop telling me it’s safe when he’s out there… watching, waiting.”

Bexley stands, blowing out an exasperated breath. “I know this is hard… I know you’re—”

“Crazy?” I sneer. “Is that what you think? That I’m losing my mind?”

Because I think I am.

Bexley drops to his knees and runs his hands up my thighs. “I think you’re hurting… and your mind is playing tricks on you. Look at me, baby.” He slides a finger under my chin, forcing me to look at him. “Cade is gone. And when…ifhe shows up again, we’ll be ready. I will never let him hurt you again, I promise.” His hand curves around the back of my neck, drawing my face down to his. “I need you, Mia. I need you so fucking much. Come back to me, baby. Please, come back to me.”

The air crackles between us as he stares at me with utter desperation.

“I don’t know how to be that girl anymore,” I whisper around a shuddering breath. “I feel like I can’t breathe, Bex… I feel like I’m drowning…”

“I’ll help,” he says with so much emotion I feel winded. “Just let me help you.”

Bexley

As I stare into Mia's eyes, Cole's advice from earlier comes back to me.

"She needs to get out of her head. Trust yourself to know what she needs. Take control and don't stop until the only thing she can think about is you."

Tears swim in Mia's eyes as her body trembles with fear beneath my hands. I'd give anything to be able to take away everything that's stopping her sleeping, that's stopping her from being the incredible person I know she is.

Swallowing down my trepidation, I decide to follow Cole’s advice and trust that I know exactly how to give her an escape.

Sliding my hands up her legs, I massage my thumbs into her soft flesh. Her lips part as I get to the juncture of her thighs.

"Bexley," she warns, her voice still weak and full of fear.

"Trust me, Mia."

"I can't, Bex. I'm not that girl anymore." The emotion in her voice breaks my already battered heart.
