“W-what is that? What are you doing to me?” I croak as the darkness begins to close in around me. “Bexley, no.” My voice fades. “Please, don’t let him… oh God, no…”

It’s futile. The pull of the abyss is too strong, dragging me down. Down… down…down… My limbs become heavy and my thoughts melt away.

Until there’s nothing.

Bexley

My heart shatters as I watch her fight against her memories. I only know the very basics of the events after she got back to the house with Cade. The only two people who know the truth are those who were there, and I'd really hoped that Mia wouldn't remember, because from what Channing told me about the state he found her in, and the fact that she was only wearing his shirt when she was brought into the hospital, I know it can't have been good.

I've tried to push the marks that fucker left on her body from my mind, but I can't. They're right there, along with the image of her lying on the ground around the back of her house.

As I ran toward the house after the explosion, I heard Channing's voice calling for help, and I ran faster than I think I ever have in my life. My heart was in my throat as I refused to allow myself to consider the possibility that they weren't inside when the house went up in flames.

It turned out that they'd only arrived seconds before I had, and after trying and failing to get through the front door, Channing was carrying a passed-out Mia around the back of the house to get inside.

After tracking her cell to the Electi house, he heard her scream and went searching. She demanded that he take her home, assuming it would be a safe place to go.

How wrong she’d been.

No one has confirmed our suspicions, but we're all thinking the same thing.

Cade is behind it.

We have no idea if he intended for Mia to go home and get caught up in the blast, but he clearly wanted her parents gone. Which only confirms what we already knew about her father.

Garth Thompson killed Gregory Kingsley.

All of this was one big, fucked-up revenge plan on Cade's part.

He wanted vengeance for his father's murder, and what better way for the twisted motherfucker to get it than to take it out on the murderer's daughter?

I hate to say it, but he did a fucking good job. It seems that no one had any idea what he was planning, which is both impressive and terrifying. Mostly because no one has seen him since that house blew up and we have no idea where he is.

At some point, Sasha and Channing make their excuses and head back to the house so they can shower and sleep, but I still refuse to leave her.

I've been here since the moment the ambulance brought her in, and I won't leave until she does. I don't give a shit how many times people tell me to go home and get some rest. I refuse to leave her side, even more so now I've seen how terrified she was when her memories started coming back.

With Mia’s hand locked in mine, I rest back in the chair and close my eyes for what feels like the first time in a week, but the second I start to drift off, the image of him touching her fills my mind and I jolt awake once more.

"Fucking hell," I mutter, rubbing my hand across my rough jaw.

The motherfucker isn't even here, and he's still fucking tormenting me.

I stare at Mia. Her face shows the evidence of the trauma she went through on Saturday night, both at the hands of that monster and from the explosion that blew her and Channing halfway across her parents’ backyard. There are cuts and grazes along her cheekbones and forehead, and her neck is covered in fading hickeys from that motherfucker. The sight makes my stomach turn over, but it's not enough to make me walk away. Nothing will ever force me to do that. I just wish I could take her pain away.

She doesn’t deserve this.

She doesn’t deserve any of it.

It's hours later when she starts to stir as the drugs they pumped into her veins begins to wear off.

"Mia?" I whisper when her fingers lightly squeeze mine and her eyelids start to flicker.

Sitting closer, I make sure I'm in her eyeline so that when she does finally open her eyes, she knows she's not alone.

"Bex," she breathes. "Tell me all of this is a nightmare?"
