Pain slices through my chest at the vulnerability in her voice. "I'm so sorry, mouse," I whisper.

It takes her a few more minutes before she finally drags her eyes open and I get to look at her.

"Hey."

"Hey." The slightest smile curls at her lips when she sees me, but it doesn't last anywhere near long enough.

"How are you feeling?"

"B-better," she lies. "What happened, Bex? Please, I need to know how I ended up here."

I swallow nervously, not wanting to be the one to tell her but knowing that it can't really come from anyone else."Let's start at the beginning. What do you remember?"

She looks away from me and swallows nervously as pain twists her features."You don't want to hear it."

I know."You need to tell me, Mia."

She nods and closes her eyes.

When she doesn't start speaking, I pour her a fresh glass of water and hold it up for her."Here, drink this first."

She looks down at the cup and allows me to help her."Thank you," she whispers when she's had enough. After holding my eyes for a beat, she looks at the wall once more and sucks in a deep breath. "When we got back to the house, I told him that I couldn't do it. I refused to go into the house," she starts quietly. "He… he called me ‘little mouse.’ He knows, Bex. He knows we've been together again."

Reaching forward, I hold one of her hands in both of mine, hoping that I can give her some strength to tell me all of this.

“Then he told me to run. So I did. I ran so fucking fast through that forest, but I was no match for his speed. He soon caught up with m-me." She inhales a ragged breath.

"Motherfucker," I growl, the word falling from my lips without instruction from my brain.

"I can't, Bex. You don't need to know."

"Mia, baby. I already know. The doctors examined you when you first came in."

"Oh my God," she cries, covering her face with her free hand.

"It's okay," I say softly, pulling her hand away so she can't hide from me. "I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere. No matter what you tell me."

She nods, tears pooling in her eyes, but none of them fall. Not yet, anyway.

"H-he… he was crazy, Bex. His eyes, they were pure evil. He spat all this crap at me. Told me h-how… my dad had k-killed Gregory and that he wanted revenge. It was like he was possessed. It was awful, worse than I ever could have imagined. It hurt. All of it hurt so much."

Fuck. It’s painful to hear this, but she needs to get it out, and part of me needs to know.

"I'm so sorry."

"It seemed to go on forever. But then, all of a sudden, he was gone, and I was alone. I remember screaming, crying… certain that no one was going to find me, wondering how I was ever going to find my way back to the house." A sob erupts from her throat, causing a lump to grow in mine with the knowledge that I wasn't there to help her.

"Then Channing was there, pulling his shirt off for me and lifting me into his arms. He had the moonlight glowing behind him and I remember thinking that he looked like my guardian angel."

"Do you remember what happened next?"

She's silent for a few seconds as she thinks. "He… he put me in his car, I think, and I asked for you. I needed you. I needed you so badly, Bex." It's those six little words that finally force her tears to drop.

The sight guts me.

Reaching out, I wipe them from her cheeks as more fall."Anything else?" I ask softly.

She shakes her head. "I must have passed out in the car. Then the next time I woke, I was here. With you." She falls silent again, lost in thought. It's as if she has more memories but can't quite get a grasp on them.
