“You followed me?” It’s then I notice he’s wearing a black hoodie.

“You…” I point at him, my lip wobbling as I try to process what this means. “Was it you? Were you in my class just now?” The words are a garbled mess as tears streak down my face.

Ashton holds up his hands, slowly inching toward me. “Whoa, I don’t know what happened, Mia. But it wasn’t me, I swear.”

“I-I can’t trust you. You’re his best friend… you’re his—"

“I know. Believe me, I know. But Kingsley screwed me over too.” Regret glitters in his eyes. At least, I think it’s regret. But this could all be part of some elaborate plan to manipulate me.

“You should go,” I cry, grabbing my cell from my pocket.

“I’m not going to do that, Mia. Why don’t you just calm down and tell me what happened.”

“Don’t tell me to calm down,” I snap when the door swings open again and Brook slips inside.

“Oh my God, what happened?” She stares at me.

“Brook.” Ashton moves into her line of sight, and I realize he’s shielding me from her. “Now is not a good time.”

But in true Brook fashion, she steps around her brother. “What is—”

“This doesn’t concern you,” I seethe. She’s kept her distance, much to my relief. But now she’s standing there, looking at me like I’m a caged animal. And I hate her.

I hate her so much.

“Get out. Get out. GET OUT!” I yell over and over, my cracked words echoing off the ceiling.

“She’s a nutcase. Look at her,” she scoffs. “I don’t know why you’re wasting your time on—”

“I swear to God, Brook, if you don’t back the fuck up, I will…” Ashton heaves a deep breath, glaring at his sister. “You need to leave. Now.”

“Wait a second, don’t tell me you’re actually siding with… withher.” She practically spits the word.

My eyes grow to saucers as I watch Ashton grab her and shove her toward the door. “If you know what’s good for you, Sister, you’ll stay the fuck away from Mia.”

Brook’s protests are drowned out as he pushes her through the door and lets it slam closed behind him.

“I can’t believe you did that,” I whisper.

“I meant what I said, Mia. You can trust me.” He closes the distance between us slowly, keeping his hands where I can see them. “Now why don’t you tell me what happened?”

“He was there. He was right freaking there.”

“Okay, okay.” His hand goes to his pocket. “I’m going to call Bexley, okay? And I’ll wait with you until he gets here. We can wait right here.”

My eyes dart wildly to the cell in his hand and back to his eyes. He seems genuine, not like the arrogant cocky asshole I usually know him to be.

“He’s… he’s at a meeting with Q.”

“Okay, I’ll call Channing. You trust Channing, right?”

I nod, shaking as the adrenaline leaves my body.

“You don’t look so good.”

“I feel…” I sway as the room spins.

“Fuck, Mia.” Ashton catches me before I hit the deck, pulling me into his arms.
