“I-I think I’m going to—"

The room spins again, and I fall down… down… down into the black abyss.

Until nothing.

* * *

When I come to, I’m in a bed that feels unfamiliar in a small room I don’t recognize.

“Bexley?” I murmur, pushing the hair out of my face.

“He’ll be here soon,” a voice says from the corner of the room.

“Ashton?” Fear snakes through me as I clutch the sheet to my body.

“Relax, I’m not here to hurt you. You fainted. I didn’t know what else to do, so I brought you to the campus medical center.”

“Thank you.”

He nods, running a hand over his jaw. “How are you feeling?”

“Like I was hit by a truck.”

“The nurse said your vitals looked okay. But she’ll probably want to speak to you. I asked her to give you some space, though… until Bexley gets here.”

“Thanks.” My voice cracks. “I saw him, Ashton. He was right there.”

“Mia, I think—"

“Mia?” Bexley bursts into the room. “Thank fuck.” He rushes to my bedside. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I passed out, and Ashton brought me here.”

Bexley goes rigid, his jaw popping with frustration. “Explain,” he barks at Ashton, who flicks his eyes to mine.

“Don’t look at her, look at me—"

“Bex,” I whisper, reaching for his arm. “It’s okay. Ashton helped me.”

“Look, I should probably go.” He gets up and makes for the door.

“Wait,” I call out, much to Bexley’s annoyance.

“It’s all good,” Ashton says. “I know things were messed up before… but I didn’t know he’d take it that far. I didn’t—"

“You should go,” Bexley grits out, anger radiating from him.

“Okay, but I meant what I said earlier.” He gives me a small nod. “And I’ll talk to Brook. I’ll tell her to stay away.” Ashton disappears, closing the door behind him.

“What happened?” Bexley runs his eyes over me, the concern there overwhelming.

If I tell him the truth, he won’t believe me. No one will. So I swallow it down and instead say, “I came over all funny in class. I don’t know if I was too hot or hungry, but I barely managed to get to the bathroom before I fainted.”

“And Ashton just happened to be there?” Suspicion coats his words.

“He saw me stagger to the bathroom and was worried.”

Bexley snorts at that.
