He falls into step beside me. “I think you’re right.”

“Excuse me?” My head whips up to meet his grim expression.

“I don’t think you’re crazy, Mia. I think Kingsley is… fuck,” he breathes, glancing around. “Can we talk about this somewhere else?”

“I’m meeting Sasha for coffee.”

“Can’t you unmeet her?”

“I’m not going anywhere with you. For all I know, you’re working—"

“I get it.” His hands go up. “I’m an asshole. I get off on the power, I enjoy being at the top. But I never signed up for…” He leans in, whispering the words. “Cold-blooded murder.”

“You’ve killed people,” I deadpan. If Cade made Bexley do it, there’s no way Ashton hasn’t too.

A flicker of something flashes over his face. “It’s not the same.”

“Isn’t it?” I let out a heavy sigh. “Look, I need to go—"

“I heard something. A conversation between Phillip and Lincoln Kingsley.”

“Cade’s uncle?”

He nods. “Ten minutes, that’s all I ask.”

I’m torn. On the one hand, I want to know what he knows. But on the other, I don’t trust Ashton Moore in the slightest.

“Fine.” Curiosity wins out. “Ten minutes. But I’m texting Sasha.”

“You should. Someone should know where you are at all times.” He hesitates, rubbing his jaw. “In fact, I’d have thought Easton would be here.”

“He’s busy.” My teeth grind as I type out a quick message to Sasha and motion for Ashton to follow me down the hall.

“Q?”

“Yeah.”

“Man, they’ve already got their hooks into him.” He holds the door open for me and I slip outside. “You want to keep a close eye on your guy, Mia. If he gets in too deep…”

“What choice does he have? He’s Electi. It’s his birthright.”

“Maybe so. But I’ve watched him. He isn’t cut out for this life.”

His words twist something inside me. I wish it were true, but there isn’t any way out for me and Bexley. He was brought to Gravestone for a reason. Marcus and Phillip wanted him to take the power from Cade. They wanted this. Maybe they didn’t plan for it to go down the way it did, but the goal was the same.

Finding a bench in plain sight of everyone, I sit. Ashton joins me, careful to keep a reasonable distance between us.

“What did you overhear?” I ask, getting right to it.

“What do you know about Lincoln?”

“I know that he runs things for Q in another town. That he wanted Cade protected.”

“But that’s just the thing. Cade barely knows the guy.”

My brows furrow. “He doesn’t?”

“He talked to me once, about his old man and his uncle. Said his dad never forgave Q for sending his brother away.”
