"I'm not here just because of what Cade did, am I?" she guesses correctly.

"No, baby." I squeeze her hand tighter as I prepare for what I need to tell her next. "Channing took you to your parents, like you asked, and I got straight into a car to meet you there, but when I got there—"

A knock on the door startles us both before it opens and Phillip Cargill appears.

"Mia, it's so good to see you awake," he says, his expression neutral like always as he holds her eyes. "How are you feeling?"

"I'll be okay. W-why are you here?"

If he's offended by her blunt question, then he doesn't show it. I guess he should have expected it. He doesn't strike me as someone who's cared about her well-being before, evidenced by the situation he allowed her to get in the middle of.

"I wanted to come and offer my condolences for your parents," he says before I'm able to cut him off.

"F-for my parents." Mia's brows pull together. "What's wrong with my parents? Bexley?" She turns to me, panic filling her eyes, her already pale complexion even worse as all the blood drains from her face.

Ignoring Phillip, I continue where I left off. "When I arrived at your house, it was seconds before it… fuck,” I murmur. “There was… an explosion, Mia. I'm so sorry."

"Oh my God," she gasps, her free hand covering her mouth as more tears spill down her cheeks.

"I'm so sorry."

"M-my parents were inside?"

"Yes," Phillip answers before I get a chance to say anything.

"Oh my God." Her cries get louder before sobs begin to wrack her body.

Unable to leave her in bed alone, I kick my sneakers off, lift the sheet covering her and climb in beside her so I can pull her into my arms."I'm so sorry, mouse. I'm so sorry," I whisper into her hair as she clings to me.

My own eyes burn with emotion as she continues to cry, and I hold her as tight as I can, hoping that I'm not hurting her worse than she already is.

"It was him, wasn't it? It was Cade. He wanted them dead," she says after a long excruciating minute.

"We don't have confirmation of that but—"

"It was him," she says, her voice strong and confident."He knows that my father killed Gregory." For the first time ever, Phillip looks unsure of himself.

"H-how do you know that, Mia?"

"It doesn't matter how,” she hisses, disdain dripping from her voice. “What's important is that Cade knows, and he's not going to stop until he's brought you all down."

"We have no idea where Cade is right now."

A humorless laugh falls from Mia's lips. "I really suggest you look harder, because if you're not careful, you and everyone you love is going to end up as collateral in all of this. Cade won’t stop."

Phillip swallows somewhat nervously.

"Find him," she demands. "Find him and kill him before he gets to everyone else."

Her warning rings out loud long after the words have left her lips, turning my blood cold and sending a shiver down my spine.

Cade might be gone right now.

But this is far from over.
