"We will, man… we will."

Mia

Iwake to the flicker of candlelight. My eyes strain against the darkness as I search the cold tomb. It’s familiar, the huge stone bricks a feature of the nightmare that started all of this.

The Eligere.

I’m in the sanctuary, the small chamber underneath Gravestone Hall.

“C-Cade?” I cry out, my throat dry and sore. But I’m met with silence.

My muscles ache, heavy like lead from whatever Cade injected me with before bundling me into the car. I didn’t even think to check that the BMW I ran toward actually belonged to Bexley. I walked straight into the trap.

I knew… I knew it was a set-up. Yet he went anyway.

Damn you, Bexley Easton.

A whimper crawls up my throat as I push up on my hands and knees and try to stagger to my feet, but I can’t.

A leather strap is bound around my ankle and secured to a chain pinned to the wall. Besides, even if I could escape, whatever drug lingers in my bloodstream is still too potent and I crumple back down.

“Help me,” I cry, refusing to accept this is my fate. “Somebody help me.”

“Don’t worry, little mouse.” Cade appears out of the shadows. “Lover boy will be here soon enough.”

“Cade,” I breathe, as if my heart can’t process what my head already knows.

“We meet again,” he drawls through a vicious smirk.

“You fucking bastard,” I spit. “Why?”

“Why?” He storms toward me, crouching to bring us almost to eye level. “What’s that saying… an eye for an eye.”

“He was just following orders. Quinctus—"

“Quinctus will pay,” he hisses. “When he arrives and the truth is finally unveiled, they’ll pay for ever crossing the Kingsley name.”

Digging his cell phone out of his pocket, he checks the screen, frowning. “Where is he?” he murmurs.

“What?”

“Nothing.” He shoots me a hard look and stands, pacing back and forth as he types out a message, his fingers moving frantically across the screen.

He’s on edge. Unstable and wired.

Nothing like the cool, calm, and composed Cade I’m used to.

“I need some water,” I say. “Please.”

He glances down at me and stalks off into the shadows again, reappearing with a bottle of water. “Here.” The bottle falls at my feet, and I scramble to get the cap off, chugging it down.

“Where is he?” he mumbles again.

“Where is who, Cade?”

“You’ll see.” His eyes snap to mine, wild and skittish. “You’ll all see.”
