"Mia," I cry. I stumble toward her. She’s in a heap on the floor, and I frantically check her body for blood. “What happened?”

“It’s over,” she breathes, her voice cracking with emotion.

“Kingsley?” My eyes sweep the room, landing back on Mia’s face, confusion tugging at my brows.

“Gone, Bex. He’s gone.”

Mia

Bexley hesitates, clearly not wanting to leave me with Cade.

“Brave, if not a little stupid,” Cade remarks, pulling me further into the shadows, the gun still pressed firmly against my head.

“You don’t want to hurt me, Cade,” I say calmly.

Bitter laughter spills from his lips as he whirls me around to face him. “And how the fuck would you know what I want?”

“Because I read your journal… I know what your father did to you. I know that he broke you and then left you.”

“He didn’t leave me though, did he? He was murdered by... Your. Fucking. Father.”

“And you got your vengeance. He’s gone, Cade. My father is gone.” I’m surprised at how calm my voice sounds, but something clicked inside me earlier, and it’s like I know what I have to do now.

There’s been too much bloodshed. Too much pain and anger and chaos. Gravestone is a man’s world, but sometimes it takes a woman’s touch to smooth out the cracks.

I won’t spend my life living in fear.

It. Ends. Today.

Courage rushes through my veins as I stare Cade down. He has the gun, the power. He holds all the cards… but I have something he doesn’t.

Love.

My heart is full of it. Love for Bexley. For Sasha and Channing. For myself. I have been beaten, bruised, and broken. Raped and left for dead. But I’m still here. I’m still standing. And Bexley’s right; I have too much to live for. Too much to fight for.

Cade’s eyes flicker with confusion. He expects me to cower, to cry and beg for my life. But I’m not the same girl who stood before him the night of the Eligere.

It might only have been a few months ago, but it feels like a lifetime. My heart is broken and my soul is scarred, but I’m still here.

I inhale a deep breath, letting it settle the nervous energy zipping through me. “What do you want, Cade?”

“W-what?” he stutters, staring at me through wild eyes.

“You heard me. What do you want?”

“I want revenge. I want those bastards to pay.”

“So why am I here and not Phillip? Why did you send them away?”

His brows furrow, and he rubs the back of his hand across his forehead. “I… you’re the weak link.”

“Am I? Or am I everything you’ve wanted but never felt you deserved?”

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Your dad was an abusive asshole and your mom stood by and let him mold you, break you into…this.”
