“Maker has told me you feel dizzy,” the doctor says and I nod and his hands curve around my head. He checks for bumps and I let out a low moan when he presses a tender point. “And you don’t remember anything from your life?”

I shake my head and he rises, turning to Maker who’s watching him with suspicion.

“Go on then?” he grinds between his teeth. “What’s your diagnosis?”

“Like you said, she has amnesia but no concussion and she won’t need any extensive treatment. It’s not much you can do in cases like these, other than therapy so...”

“What about her memory?” Maker interrupts. “When will it return?”

Holding my breath, I wait impatiently for the answer. What if it never comes back? Could I even marry Maker if it doesn’t come back? Won’t he have a problem with taking an amnesiac as his bride?

“My guess is within a couple of weeks. Could be months and if she’s lucky it’ll return within a few days.”

At that my heart joyfully skips a beat because that doesn’t sound too bad but Maker’s eyes have darkened.

“Days?” he asks and it sounds like he’s had his breath punched out of him. “You’re not an expert. You can’t be sure.”

The doctor seems surprised. “You don’t sound pleased. Isn’t this what you wanted to hear? Don’t you want your bride to regain her memory before your wedding?”

I gasp and a muscle ticks in Maker’s jaw.

“Don’t be ridiculous. Of course I do.”

Even though the doctor nods, he throws a strange glance at me and then at Maker and it unnerves me a little. This is bizarre. Why is the doctor looking at me as if I need to be careful with my fiancé?

“That will be all,” Maker says in a tense voice. “Madlen, say goodbye to the good doctor.”

“Goodbye,” I whisper and doc lifts a finger in the air.

“Wait.” He rummages for something in his bag. “Here’s my card if you need to call me.” He hands me the card and I clasp it between my fingers. Clearing his throat, he hurries past Maker who walks him out as if he needs to make sure that doc doesn’t stick around. I play with the card. It’s my only contact outside of Maker and maybe that’s subconsciously so precious to me that it’s no surprise I hide it beneath my pillow when I hear Maker’s footsteps coming up the staircase.

He stops in the doorway, his eyes landing on me and I give him a pale smile.

“Good to get rid of him,” he says, tugging at his tie. “We went to college together but I could never warm up to him.” He walks over to the bed. “You must be tired. And hungry. Do you want me to order you some food?”

I shake my head because I’m not hungry but I ask, “What do I like to eat?”

“Your favorite is anything spicy,” he replies without hesitating. “The fierier the better.”

My smile widens because I like hearing him talk about me. He gets a special expression in his eyes, so loving, so tender, so....zealous. I shouldn’t be surprised considering how many photos of me that he has but no photos of anybody else. He doesn’t even have paintings. He decorated his house just by using me.

“And you like anime,” he continues, “any kind but your favorites are the ones from the 90’s and you can’t have any plants because you forget watering them.”

I snigger a little and the corners of his mouth gently turn upward and he lifts a hand, stroking my face and my lids flutter. I like his touch and it feels more than good to receive his affections.

“You’re so sweet, beloved,” he rasps, making me feel cherished. “My sweet Madlen.” His hand slides down my throat and he strokes my pulse. “Now tell me what you did with the card the doctor gave you.”

The sudden change in the tone of his voice makes me tense up and I stare up at him.

“Why do you ask?”

He removes his hand and his expression turns stern. “Is there a reason why you’re hiding the card from me?”

“N...no, it’s just that he gave it to me in case I’d need anything....” I gasp when Maker bores his eyes into mine.

“If there is anything you need, I will give it to you. All you will ever need is me. You will never turn to another man, do you understand?”

“He’s a d...doctor,” I breathe but Maker doesn’t seem to care. In his eyes, all males seem to be a threat.
