“Madlen,” he says gently but firmly, “the card.”

Hesitating for a second, I retrieve the card and hand it to him. His eyes dim when he notices I was hiding it behind the pillow. he clasps it in his hand, before he tears the card in little pieces and flushes it down the toilet in the adjoining bathroom.

I mutely stare at him and I get a lump in my throat.

“It was necessary,” Maker begins but when he catches the look in my eyes he turns nervous. “I had to do it. He shouldn’t have given you his card. He knows thatIwill call him if he’s needed.” His fists clench. “He was trying to take you from me.”

My eyes round in astonishment. “He was just doing his job...”

“He took liberties with my bride. Do you understand me?” He points at himself. “My bride. Not his, not anyone’s but mine and only mine.”

Squirming, I let out a pant from his rising emotions. I avert my gaze but it seems to set him off.

“Are you angry with me now? For protecting you?”

I don’t reply and he takes a step closer.

“Madlen, you can’t reject me. Ever. Unless you want to ruin me.”

Slowly I turn my face to him again, whispering, “I don’t want to ruin you.”

His eyes liquidize. “There’s something I want you to have.” He puts his hand into his pocket and takes out the most gorgeous sapphire ring. “It was my mother’s but now it is yours.” My heart speeds up when he goes down on one knee. “Will you marry me, beloved?”

Warmth floods me at his sweetness. He’s already asked me to marry him once before but now he’s doing it all over solely for my sake. Because I can’t remember his first proposal. This must be so hard for him, maybe even excruciating as there’s a tense expression on his face as if he thinks I’ll say no.

But no girl in her right mind would say no to someone like Maker.

“Yes,” I smile, “I’ll marry you...” I bite my lip as he threads the ring on my finger and his hand is shaking a little. Once the ring is on he presses his forehead against the back of my hand murmuring fast and frantic words, I can’t make sense of. His breaths are ragged and his skin is hot against mine as if he’s about to have a fever.

“Thank you.” The words are barely a whisper out of his mouth. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

His eyes stir with possessiveness. “For letting me love you.”

Maker

She spoils me with her willingness to be mine. My mother’s ring glimmers on her finger. It’s the first time its decorating Madlen but it looks like it was made for her, even bringing out the color in her eyes.

Getting up from kneeling, I feel a flash of panic when I notice that the ring is sitting a little too loose. I want it to sit tighter; I want it to be difficult for her to take it off. Rubbing a hand down my face, I realize I’m going to have to take it the jeweler.

Leaning against the pillows, Madlen twirls the ring around and there’s a dazed expression on her face. My heart hurts from looking at her like this and nothing has fully sunken in yet. I can’t believe my beloved is in my house, can’t believe I’ve tricked her into believing she’s my bride.

I’ve done wrong.

Then open your mouth, tell the truth and make everything right.

But I don’t. I can’t. Not when she’s looking at me with those sensuous eyes, not when she trusts me as much as she does. I feel a pang of worry when remembering the doctor’s words. If Madlen regains her memory within a few days, then she’ll know everything, she’ll know I lied and she’ll be able to change her mind.

What I need is for her to marry me as soon as possible. Problem is, I don’t know how to go about it. Agreeing to marry me is one thing but going through with a wedding is something else...

“Maker?” Madlen whispers, jerking me out of my thoughts. “Can I remove my clothes now?”

Of course. I forgot about that. She’s all covered up and I always keep the central heating on.

Nodding, I walk over to my closet and search for a nightgown. There’s a couple of pajamas too, thick and made out of flannel but since my morality has been squeezed out of me, I reach for something that’s so tiny and thin that she might as well not wear anything.
