"I don't know what you want me to say."

"You see, Grace, I'm old school."

“That should mean something to me?”

“It should.I play by the rules that I know work.Rules that get results.”

“It's mutual, Grace. What benefits me also benefits you.”

“If only I believed you.”

I saw her hands. She had balled them into fists and tucked them into the side of her abdomen.I had seen this before.I have seen it thousands of times in therapy. It was the body language of someone who was about to hit.Someone who was about to become violent.Someone who was coming to terms with the depth of their mental illness.Someone who lives in a different reality.

I started to back away from the desk.I tried to stand up, but before I could, she lunged toward me.It happened so quickly, I didn’t have time to react.I couldn’t get out of the way, and she slammed an open palm into the left side of my face.I felt a sharp pain, and then the room spun. She backed away when I looked up at her.“I’m sorry.”

My face stung, and my eye socket throbbed something fierce, but I managed to get to my feet.“You're going to be.”
