“No way! Me too,” he said.

“I love it! And there’s always a kid who will offer to help me when I can’t get mine to fly.”

“I’ll help you,” he offered. “I’m a whiz at kites.”

“Well, truthfully, before I go kite flying, I’m going to a couple of apartment open houses. I broke up with that guy, and living with Mom and Dad is not going to cut it.”

“I’m sorry,” he said, looking at her with empathy.

And then Rene remembered the connection. Pam and Dan. Did he know Pam was seeing someone else, too?

“Are you still seeing my aunt?”

“No, not really. We talk on the phone, but I’m pretty sure she’s seeing someone else.”

“It’s probably tacky of me to say, but it’s my boyfriend. My ex-boyfriend, that is.”

“Oh jeez, that tall, handsome guy I meant at Pam’s? Yikes, I couldn’t compete with him in my youth.”

“Yes, you can, Dr. Gage. You’re every bit as handsome as Dan is, in a more distinguished way.”

“You think so?” he asked, chuckling.

“Ha! I do.”

“How about if we get our kites and I go apartment shopping with you?”

“I’d love that,” she said, trying not to jump for joy.

“And we can stop and get cider and donuts at the cider mill if you’d like.”

“It’s the perfect day for the cider mill. Thank you so much, Dr. Gage. I accept.”

“And please, call me Blake.” He offered her his arm on the way into the drugstore, and she gladly took it.

“Okay, Blake it is.”

“Here comes the bride, all dressed in white.”

Andy Roman smiled at Sandra beautifully dressed in a pretty white sundress. That morning, rifling through her closet, she’d found the dress, and a shot of adrenaline went through her body. It was the sundress she’d worn the last time she and Jack had been together.

Pulling it off the hanger, it felt right to wear it on her wedding day to Andy, closing a chapter of her life and beginning a new one. Andy was the love of her life. He was the polar opposite of Jack morally, but with just as much panache. And she knew she’d be beneficial to him in the next few years as he campaigned for mayor.

The judge and his wife waited at the door for the attractive couple.

“You make a beautiful bride, my dear!”

“Thank you. Thank you for doing this on a holiday, too.”

“Don’t remind him,” Andy said, laughing.

“I owe you,” the judge said to Andy, shaking his hand. “This is payback. Are we even now?”

“Oh God, I don’t even want to know what this is about,” the judge’s wife said.

“The judge and the DA,” Sandra singsonged, and they all chuckled.
