The ceremony was short and sweet. They walked back out to Andy’s car, hand in hand.

“I bet I’m pregnant,” Sandra said. “Can you stop at the drugstore? I’ll get a test.”

“Can you tell this early?”

“Well, if I got pregnant Friday night, there’s a test that can tell eight days after conception, so I can do the test this Friday.”

“Great, I’ll be a wreck for five days.”

“You’ll be fine,” she said. “I’ll take care of you while we wait. We both have a crazy week coming up, too. The time will fly by.”

“Well, Mrs. Roman—”

“Yes, husband o’ mine.”

“Drugstore and then home?”

“Yes, my love, then home.”

“I love you, Sandra.”

“And I love you.”

Epilogue

The house was quiet, only the noise of a storm out to sea crashing outside their bedroom. Ryan had fallen asleep before eleven as usual, and she covered him with a blanket, leaving the bedroom with her clothes in hand. She’d wait at the window until she saw Lily on the beach. The crescent moon had already set to the southwest, so there was no reflection on the water, no light by the silvery moon. Ambient light that far north on the beach was absent. Closer to Sandra’s cottage, the streetlights from the marina and pizzeria made it possible to get around without a flashlight, but they obscured the starlight.

It was cold out. The sand had lost the heat of the day when she snuck from the house after seeing Lily approach. She was a shadow, moving north. They wore dark clothes when they met on the beach; less chance of being seen. Lisa’s gold hair was a dead giveaway, and she had jammed a knitted cap in her pants, for later.

“I wondered if you were going to make it tonight,” Lily said as Lisa caught up with her. “Lights were on at your house late.”

“We were watching a movie.”

“Anything good?”

“Chasing Amy.”

“Oh. Ha! Appropriate.”

They embraced in the shadows, and Lisa kissed her, parting her lips with her tongue. Hands running down Lily’s ample body, Lisa desired her against her will. What started out as a ruse had given way to passion. But it had to end.

“Do you think you can get away tomorrow?” Lily asked.

“I guess I could say we’re meeting for coffee,” Lisa answered. “But you’ll be working. It’s a holiday, and the kids don’t have school. Daniela will be ready for my help by noon. I’ll make it up to you.”

They kissed more, this time Lily not taking no for an answer and slipping her hands in between Lisa’s legs so that she got a little weak in the knees. Then she reciprocated, kneading Lily until she started to moan.

“We’d better get off the beach,” Lily said. “Let’s go head up to the picnic area.”

They held hands, talking as they walked north for fifteen minutes. Lisa pulled two bottles out of her sweatshirt pocket.

“Hey, I brought us wine coolers. This is the best brand yet.”

Twisting off the top, she handed one to Lily.

“Whoa! That’s good,” Lily said, sipping. “Yikes!”

“I know. Ha! It’s maybe a bit over the top with the faux cherry flavoring.”
