Turning to the bed, he got in and climbed right to her to embrace.

“I hate it when you have to go out at night.”

Smoothing her hair back from her face, he kissed her. “It doesn’t happen that often. I’m safe when I’m out. There were about ten sheriff deputies. I was surrounded.”

She rolled on her back and pulled him on top of her. “If anything happened to you, I wouldn’t be able to go on. I’ve never had that before, Will. I’m almost afraid of my good fortune.”

“I can’t live without you either, baby.”

He slid his arms around her back and held her up to his body. “Let me in, please.”

She wrapped her legs around his waist, and that was all it took. He gained access, and they were locked together for the duration.

The light streamed in through Hocus’s bedroom window. She squinted; there was a fully dressed man standing in front of her dresser, combing his hair.

“Aw, crap, Damon. Do you have to leave?”

“I do. I have a job this morning, not Sandra, I might add, an extra fare I picked up. A family headed to the airport today. It’ll be quick. I’m assuming I’m invited to the famous party.”

“You are. Where you go, I go,” she said, sitting up. “I’m not ready to face that family this morning. My girl wants to grieve her boyfriend having a terminal illness, and instead we have to entertain all these ingrates.”

He leaned over to kiss her goodbye. “Goodbye, my love. And thank you for last night. Making love to you is going to propel me through the day. I’m so grateful.”

“Aw, I’m grateful, too. Call me?”

“As soon as I’m on my way home, I’ll send you a text.”

“Do you want coffee?”

“I’m way ahead of you. There’s coffee in the kitchen up here. I was afraid of running into the grandmothers’ boyfriends downstairs.”

“Ha! I’m pretty sure they are shocked that black people live here. I might lay it on thick today.”

“Don’t invite trouble, Merlina. Anyway, we’re just as bad, stereotyping. They might be great guys.”

“I don’t think so,” she said, snickering. “It’s highly unlikely.”

“Okay, I’ll see you later.”

He kissed her again and left the apartment.

The kitchen was still empty when he got down the stairs, and making a beeline to the front door, he was safe. Out in the front, he saw Alison’s husband, Adam Marchand, walking to his coffee shop.

“Hey, neighbor, you want a ride?”

“You headed my way?” Adam asked.

“I’m going right by there. Come on. You can even sit in the back.”

“Ha! You’re funny, Damon. I’ll sit in the front with the driver.”

Damon opened the passenger door for him and went around to the driver’s side. They made small talk driving into town.

“Can I get you a coffee?” Adam asked when they arrived at Village Grounds.

“Thank you, no. I’ve had my quota for the morning. Have a good day.”
