“It’s too early to head there yet. It’s kids and grandparents. And we need to talk.”

“Okay,” she said, pulling down the visor to look in the mirror.

“You look very nice, by the way.” The dress she wore emphasized her flat stomach and huge breasts. Against his will, the interest transferred to his groin.

“I’m glad you think so,” she said, smiling.

He drove to a drive-in north of town and pulled in to a parking spot.

“Do you want anything? I’m sure Pam will have over-the-top food, but right now I want a burger and a root beer.”

“That sounds great.”

He pushed a button, and a disembodied voice asked for their order. Then he rolled up his window and put the air conditioning on.

“I wanted to talk more about your conversation with Adam.”

“Yeah, are you freaking kidding me about those two?”

Dan took a deep breath. So this probably meant she didn’t know about Ryan and Lisa, which was a good thing.

“Please be careful judging them, Lily. Alison is my sons’ aunt. They are family. I’ll be honest, I’m upset about this.”

“About what exactly?”

“About your response. It’s a side of you I missed. I thought we knew each other pretty well, but now I don’t know.”

“So you approve of that? Of what they did?”

“It doesn’t need my approval. My approval isn’t part of that scenario. That’s my point. It’s not anyone’s business. By judging them, you’re exposing a side of you that I’m having trouble dealing with.”

“Well, frankly, Dan, your acceptance of it is immoral, in my opinion, and I’m having trouble with that side ofyou.”

He nodded, thinking,We have a problem. It was like married people where one spouse was a Republican and one was a Democrat. He didn’t see how those mixed marriages worked if there was a moral component at odds.

“I’m sorry you are judging me and my family,” he finally said.

“I’m not judging.”

“You just said I was immoral for loving my son’s family. I consider Ryan my best friend, now that I think of it. He’s just the nicest guy. He’d give you the shirt off his back. He had a lapse of judgment, and one thing led to another. They didn’t even really know each other and had just found out they were related. They might have even found out after the fact; I don’t know all the details. It would be like if we suddenly discovered we had the same father.”

“Not likely,” she said, trying not to sneer.

This was the worst possible scenario for her. As far as her family was concerned, with whom she’d made the mistake of sharing Dan’s infidelities when they first dated years ago, the only thing good about him was that he was an attorney. He was an Indian, that was the next check against him in their opinion. Secondly, if they discovered the connection between Ryan and Alison, they’d never let go of it.

The food came. “I’m not even hungry now.”

“You don’t have to eat,” Dan said, unwrapping his burger. “You can eat at Pam’s.”

“I’m not sure I want to go,” she said. “I’m not sure of anything now.”

“You mean us?”

“Yes, I mean us. What do you think? This is a critical difference, Dan. We don’t have to share much, but we need to be on the same page regarding moral issues.”

“You’ve already established that I’m immoral,” he said. “You might as well get the rest of it off your chest.”

“There’s nothing more. If my family found out about Alison and Ryan, they’d freak out.”
