“I dug around, looking for birth certificates. The way I got them was probably illegal, but I didn’t care. There are more of us than me and Jack.”

“Is that right? It’s scary, isn’t it? You don’t know if the person sitting next to you is a relative.”

After Alison and Lisa and Ryan exchanged glances, they continued eating.

The doorbell rang again. “Dan,” Pam said.

Hocus went to answer.

“Who’s Dan?” Rene asked.

“Dan’s a close family friend. A local estate lawyer,” Pam answered.

“He’s not single, by any chance, is he?” Clarice asked.

“Why yes, as a matter of fact he is single.”

“What was Jack’s adopted father like?” Beverly asked. She was somewhat frustrated because they kept trying to change the topic. She was there for one reason and that was to find out more about Jack and his family. All the interruptions were annoying, that is until she saw Dan.

With mouths hanging open, they watched him enter the room. Pam bit her lip to keep from laughing. He’d done it up right, with his long curly hair in a ponytail and a white slim-fitting shirt tucked into black jeans with a black belt and some kind of weird chain thing that made him look like a motorcycle gang member. He even had black boots on, inappropriate for the beach. Dying to ask what look he was going for, she forced herself not to say anything. But she didn’t have to because Lisa opened her mouth instead.

“What are you got up as?” she asked, giggling. “You look like you pulled up on a motorcycle.”

“I did,” he replied, grinning. “I went out to the farm today, and my brother got my old Indian drivable again.”

“Middle-aged men on motorcycles are the largest group of motor vehicle injuries we get in our ER,” Rene said without hesitating.

“And you are?” he asked, visibly irritated.

Pam quickly introduced Dan to the three women.

“I can see I hit a nerve,” Rene said, not willing to let the topic go. The guy was hot, but he was a fool if he thought he was immune. “It’s a fact.”

“I’m not middle aged,” he snapped.

“Ah, Dan, yes, you are,” Lisa said, amused.

“Sit down and join us,” Pam quickly said, pulling him down into the chair next to her. “Look, your favorite. Smoked salmon.”

She picked up the tongs and placed food on his plate.

“When was the last time you were on a bike?” Rene asked.

“Who wants to know?”

“Let’s talk about Bertram Albert,” Pam said.

“I’m concerned,” Rene said. “You said yourself your brother had fixed it. When’s the last timeyourode?”

“Nineteen ninety-eight.”

“Dan, no way,” Lisa said, clucking her tongue while Ryan burst out laughing.

“I rest my case,” Rene said, snickering.

Dan picked up a sandwich and popped it in his mouth. “I’ll take ten of these.”

“Ha! They’re finger sandwiches, like a snack. Not a whole meal,” Hocus admonished. “You want a meal, come back at dinner.”
