“Look! Glass,” he yelled.

Pam squatted down and dug around for a piece of violet glass. “I’ve never seen this color! Look, Dan! Purple!”

“That’s great.”

“You found it. You should keep it. It’s good luck. Like royalty.”

“No, I want you to have it. I like it that I’m adding to your collection.”

“I guess we’re always going to be friends,” Pam said. “I was a little jealous when you were flirting with Rene.”

“You were? I’ll cancel the date if you’ll be my girl,” he said. “I never slept with anyone whose skin was as soft as yours.”

“Ha! You’ve probably said that to all your conquests. I bet you would cancel, too, and we’d be together for about a week, and you’d cheat on me.”

“I never cheated on you,” he said. “I moved fast from you to someone else, but never at the same time.”

“Whatever, that’s not why I told you I was jealous. I like keeping things honest and open between us. Hocus thinks the family has something up their sleeve.”

“I’ll be careful. I thought of the same thing, like they might be looking for money.”

“I guess this is a good time to tell you that I’m probably not going to see Jake again.”

“Wait. What happened?”

“I never heard from him on Sunday, so I drove around town and found him with a redhead at the roadhouse.”

“I don’t believe it.”

“Yeah, well, believe it. He’s on a journey, and it doesn’t include loyalty to me, so let some other poor sap order the hospital bed. It’s what I almost did. I was ready to go the limit for him. You know, let his family do it. The truth is, he did me a favor because now I don’t have to watch him die.”

“You sound bitter.”

“Do I? I’m pissed, Dan. Not twenty-four hours before, we’d had sex, and he said he loved me.”

“Oh, well, maybe I didn’t need to hear that.” Dan wasn’t above a little jealousy where Pam was concerned.

“Sorry, but you can see why I would be annoyed.”

“I can. And I’m sorry he did that to you.”

“I wish I knew who the woman was,” Pam admitted.

Tuesday morning, Laura reluctantly returned to work. The receptionist gave her a stack of messages and pointed over her shoulder to Jake’s office and mouthedterrible mood.

Laura didn’t doubt it, but it wasn’t her place to repeat what she’d learned at the party about Jake’s diagnosis.

“Hopefully, he’ll give me an assignment today. I have no idea what’s going on after being gone three days.”

“My advice is to stay in your office and get caught up on your messages. I’ve never seen Jake like this.”

“Yes, I bet you haven’t,” she muttered.

She was on her way to her office when his door opened. “I’ve got an appointment to go to. Laura, there’s a folder on your desk. When you get a chance today, please look it over. It’s a cold case. Our conversation on Saturday gave me an idea.”

“Okay. I’ll look it over.”

“I’m not sure what time I’ll be back today, so field my calls to Laura,” he said to the receptionist and left the building.
