“Don’t you say hello?”

“What are you doing here? I thought I made it clear that you weren’t to come here.”

“We’re friends,” Lily said, trying to see into the house. “That’s innocent. I’ve never seen where you live.”

“Rubbing my husband’s nose in it is not innocent, Lily,” she whispered. “My family is here. My children.”

“I won’t hurt them,” she said. “I miss you, and it’s been difficult to get together lately.”

“You know why, Lily. I can’t be up in the middle of the night and get up at six to get my children off to school. It’s too hard.”

“Invite me in, then,” she said. “I’m just a friend.”

Lisa reluctantly stepped aside to let her pass.

“Is Ryan home?”

“No.”

“Oh! I’m sorry. I want to get to know him.”

“Lily, no. Don’t do this. How would you like it if I showed up at Edith and George’s? Becausewe’re friends.”

“I’m about ready to come out to them. But I need a willing partner.”

“Well, it’s not going to be me.”

Lily just looked at her, determined. “Show me around.”

Against her better judgment, Lisa took her through the dark hallway into the great room, the light from the beach filling the beautiful space. Compared to Lily’s cramped, dingy apartment, this was a mansion.

“Wow, Lisa, this is wonderful. I’d love to have a place like this.” She grinned at Lisa, the connotation obvious.

“Make it up to Dan, and you’ll be right across the street.”

“It’s too late for Dan,” Lily said. “He’s seeing that nurse.”

“From what I hear, it’s not all that,” Lisa said. “Lily, we can’t do this anymore.”

“I don’t accept that,” she said, her voice a little louder.

“Keep your voice down. If you really gave a shit about me, you wouldn’t be here. You’re being so selfish.”

Unexpectedly, Ryan came home. Lisa felt faint. They watched him come through the door and greet everyone.

“I guess I’ve never seen him up close,” Lily whispered. “He’s gorgeous.”

“Ryan is good looking,” Lisa said. There was no getting around it. “Ry, this is Adam’s baker, Lily.”

“Hey, Lily, I’ve seen you in the coffee shop.”

“I guess I didn’t realize you were you,” Lily said, stammering.

“Would you like a cup of coffee? I know it won’t be as good as yours. And I have pastry from Pam’s. Fresh from Organic Bonanza.”

“Oh, right, Mary is over there now. I’ve heard her stuff is better than mine.”

“Have a cream horn,” Ryan said, holding out the box for her to choose. “You’ll see, they are so amazing.”
