Pausing off to the side of the entrance, they looked around, debating. “I’ll tell you what. You take the cart and shop for your clothes,” Jason said. ‘I’ll get a handbasket and pick up the few things we need at home. I’ll meet you in fifteen minutes at the ladies’ department. Will that give you enough time?”

Giggling, Lily nodded. “Probably fifteen minutes here is plenty of time to choose a few things.”

His referral to things we need at home tickled her, the innocent kind of remark that gave women hope for an everlasting relationship. She knew it might be fleeting, so she didn’t read too much into it.

In the ladies’ department, she got two pair of blue jeans she hoped would fit, a couple of long-sleeved T-shirts, that six-pack of underpants Jason had mentioned, socks, and a pair of pajamas with a rubbery Mickey Mouse decal on the shirt. Ten minutes later, she went looking for Jason, finding him in the bakery.

He looked up when she approached him. “I think we deserve pie. How about you?” he asked, threading his arm around her waist.

“Pie and donuts for tomorrow,” she replied. “I want pastry, too.”

“There’s a Greek grocery a block down from my apartment. They sell baklava.”

“We’re not your average young couple buying wine. We want sugar and lots of it,” she said.

“Are you ready to check out?”

“I am. I have all the clothing needed for a night in the city, including full-coverage, white cotton underpants. I just couldn’t bring myself to buy thongs in a bargain, half-dozen package.”

“Ha! Oh, baby, I like big white panties.”

“No way, Karas,” she said, elbowing him, so he grabbed his side and grunted.

They teased each other, bantering back and forth like that on the way to the cashier and standing in line waiting, blocking everyone else out, Jason’s arm casually draped over Lily’s shoulders as they shared stories and opinions.

By the time they got back to Jason’s apartment in Greektown, it was snowing again, the lights of the casino and the shops and restaurants reflecting off the snowdrifts. They hauled everything up the stairs and piled the groceries on the table.

Without missing a beat, they were in each other’s arms; the sexual tension between them had built up in the grocery store and on the ride home. There were no decisions to be made, no time for debating. They were hungry for each other, and they were going to have sex with no preamble.

With Lily on top, he reached up to her face. Her hair was like a silken, shining veil around her shoulders, and he pushed it away so he could see her eyes.

“I’m sorry that was so quick,” he said. “You’re so beautiful. I knew as soon as we made the move to do it that I was going to embarrass myself.”

“It was fine,” she said, leaning over to kiss him.

Sunday morning, Jason crept out of bed and got into the shower. Sunday tradition began at ten when he’d meet his parents and brother and sister at the Greek Orthodox Church in Greektown. Afterward, they’d have lunch at the Gus’s.

The sound of the shower woke Lisa up. Picking up her phone, she squinted to see the time without her contacts in, but it was hopeless and she didn’t have her glasses with her. The squeak of the shower alerted her that he’d be coming out. Sometime in the night, she’d slipped her new big underpants and new Mickey Mouse pj’s on. He walked out with a towel wrapped around his waist, and her heart pounding. That body just didn’t stop. Lean but muscular, he exuded sexuality and didn’t seem to know it.

“You’re up! I hope I didn’t wake you.”

“What time is it? I can’t see without my contacts in.”

“Just seven thirty. At ten, I meet my family at church. I would like you to come. We eat lunch at a restaurant down the street. They head home by one, so it’s short and sweet.”

“I’d like to go, but I don’t have anything to wear but what I had on last night. And my new jeans.”

“It’s casual, so your clothes from last night are fine. Please come. I want my family to meet you.”

“Really?”

Feeling happy, Lily was stuck on I want my family to meet you. She watched him let the towel drop, his buttocks flexing as he stood in front of his dresser. Pulling out sparkling white underpants and a T-shirt, she pulled the sheet up to cover her face so he wouldn’t know she was making fun of him. His clothes were whiter than hers were.

He turned around and walked to the bed, and it was the first time she got a good look him.

“Don’t you want to go?” he asked, waiting for her response.

“I can’t take my eyes off your, you know.”
