Leon had had a child with a woman other than Ava, and the mother had visitation with Violet one weekend a month.

“Did you meet Leon yet?” Joey asked.

“I did,” Geri said, wondering if there was an ugly Saint brother hiding somewhere. Where Jake was lanky, Leon looked like he could break you in half, giving her the shivers when she thought of him. She hoped he would show up so she could check out the girlfriend, too.

“Help me with the tree, Jake. Then we’ll eat.”

The two guys left the room. “So, what did you think of Leon?” Candy asked, giggling.

“Yikes.”

“Yes,” she replied, sputtering. “He’s a young version of Joey. Joey is the oldest brother.”

“I didn’t want to say too much, you know?”

“Stick around for this summer. They get a beach house, and all the brothers get into their swimsuits to play volleyball. It’s a little breathtaking.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“What do you think after your first week with my brother-in-law?”

“He’s a heartbreaker,” Geri whispered. “I really like him, but you didn’t hear it from me.”

“Ha! I won’t say anything. I like you, Geri. You’ll find the Saint family is loyal to a fault. I want you to stick around, too.”

“Well, thank you,” she replied. “I wasn’t sure if you liked me or not.”

“I’m sorry. I’m just tired.”

“I bet.” She looked tired, too, Geri thought. “I’m not sure I could do what you’re doing. Two little kids and a pediatric residency? I can’t even imagine having a kid.”

“Well, we’re even because I couldn’t get through the fire academy. I can’t hang by a rope or do a chin-up or whatever they’re called.” She looked at her thoughtfully. “Do you want kids?”

“Not really. I’m too young to have one right now at any rate. Too young and too motivated.”

“You already reached a big goal,” Candy said. “What are you going to do next?”

“I want to command a battalion,” she said, her tone of voice giving away her passion for the goal. “I start working on my bachelor’s degree in January. I can’t wait.”

“So you want Charlie’s job,” Candy stated.

“No, I want to be Charlie’s boss.”

“Oh! Okay, well, that’s something!”

Taken aback, Candy suddenly wondered what Geri could be thinking, having an ambitious goal like that and then dating the battalion chief’s nephew. “Does Jake know?”

“We haven’t gotten that far yet. We’re just in dating mode. Not bare-your-soul mode, not yet anyway. I don’t even know him that well, to tell you the truth.”

“Jake’s a great kid. He’s really a kid, too. He hasn’t dated much that we know of, at least no one that he was serious about.”

“Aw, well, I’m unsophisticated, too,” Geri said, embarrassed. “I didn’t date and I don’t now, at least not until Jake. So that’s probably why themisunderstanding.”

“Okay, gotcha. Sorry about that, Geri. Not that it should even be important!”

“Exactly. Anyway, you know all my secrets now.”

“I’m like you,” Candy explained. “I set a goal, and when I met Joey, I just added him to my schedule. It’s not impossible.”
