“Wow, I know I couldn’t do what you’re doing plus a husband who’s gone three nights out of the week. That’s a lot.”

“Tree’s in the mudroom, warming up. Come on, you two, let’s eat,” Joey said, waving the women to the kitchen.

“Don’t tell on me,” Geri said, suddenly nervous about sharing so much.

“Not a word,” Candy replied, and she would be true to her word.

So back at work, Geri would meet all of the Saints on a professional basis. Sunday at Roberta and Big Mike’s was eye opening. Between the pool competition, the arm wrestling and the beer flowing, she was dizzy when it was time to leave. Monday ended up being exactly what she never wanted, and that was a day wasted on recovery instead of accomplishing something. This was when she realized rule number one with the Saint family.

#1 Forget about having the weekends to yourself once you are accepted into the fold.

“What do you think of the family?” Aisling asked on Sunday.

“They’re pretty noisy,” Geri said, nostrils flared. “Do you come every Sunday?”

“We do. I come alone with baby Mika if Devon’s working. It’s the least I can do for Roberta and Big Mike. Mika is all they have left of Mike. I’m willing to make the sacrifice of a Sunday. It’s not easy though. Tomorrow you’ll feel like a zombie. The food alone is too much between breakfast out after church and this meal that could choke a pig.”

“Does Devon mind?” Geri asked.

“He was Mike’s best friend. Tell Jake to fill you in. He’s falling down on the job. Yep, Devon would be here with another woman if Mike were still alive. His mother and father were killed in a car wreck, and the Saints sort of adopted him.”

“I’m trying to keep all the players straight,” Geri admitted.

“So, what do you think of Leon?”

“Why’s everyone ask that?”

“Doesn’t he look like a Greek god with his hair?”

“He does, but Tony is gorgeous, Joey’s a beefcake, and Jake is amazing.”

“You’re single and Leon and Ava aren’t married,” Aisling whispered, winking.

“But they’re as good as married, right?”

“They’re engaged, but she’s dragged her feet for a couple of years now. You could probably have your choice of either brother.”

“I can’t even think of that,” Geri said, imagining the nightmare it would cause at the firehouse.

At pizza night, she’d watched Leon and Ava interacting. Ava was older than he was by maybe fifteen years and movie-star gorgeous.

“So what do you think?” Jake had whispered.

“I think I’ve eaten enough pizza to last a year,” Geri groaned.

“Don’t worry about that. You’ll work it off. No. What I mean is what do you think about Leon and Ava?”

She glanced over at them again, and they were interacting like any young couple in love. It felt honest and real.

“I hope I can find that kind of love someday,” she said softly, looking right into his eyes.

“Will you give us a chance?”

“I will,” she said. “I hope I don’t regret it. You know I’m going back to school.”

“I won’t stand in your way. I promise.”

Taking his hand, she felt a rush of affection for Jake. “I know you won’t purposely,” she said. “I’m not only worried about you.”
