Repeating the process, she had the same sensation of her whole body responding to his touch. When he finished washing the right foot, he warmed up some lotion he’d found in her medicine chest—really face cream, but she didn’t care—by rubbing it between his hands.

“That feels so wonderful,” she murmured, just going with it.

He swirled his hands around her ankle, moving up her calf again. “I should have had you take your jeans off.”

“Take them off,” she said, eager now. She wondered why she’d resisted this.

Leaning forward, he unbuttoned her jeans. She held her stomach in, the sensation of him fiddling with the waistband of her jeans sending chills through her body. “Lift up,” he commanded, his hand under her bottom, and she did. He left her underpants on, but pulled her jeans off, one leg at a time.

“If I’d known my underwear would be on display, I’d have worn something a little sexier.”

“I like your white underpants,” he said, chuckling. “They call these full coverage, right? I’ve seen the display at Costco.”

“Shut up, Jake,” she said, laughing.

Without rushing the process, he massaged more face cream into her calf, moving up her leg to the inside of her thigh. Skimming the elastic of her utilitarian underpants, he purposely tried to excite her by exploring just underneath the band and no farther.

“Whatever you’re trying to achieve, it’s working,” she said a little breathlessly.

“This is hard for me, too. I want to paint your toenails, but I might have to take you to the bed first.”

She moved her knees apart just a tad more, and his eyes went to her face then down between her legs. Reaching forward, he gently moved the fabric of her underpants over to take a peek.

“Oh, man,” he whispered.

They reached for each other and, forgetting about her toes, moved to the bed like she had really wanted to do after all.

The sun was long gone. Jake lay on his back and Geri was in the crook of his arm, her hand on his hard belly, the hairs tickling her palm. What they’d done was lovemaking. She couldn’t honestly say that was what she would have called it the few times they’d done it before when they just needed each other. What they’d done in the past was satisfying. But this had been passionate, the yearning she’d had for him unlike anything she’d ever experienced before, and he could tell because she didn’t try to hide her ardor for him. It was all out there in the open.

The byproduct of the closeness she felt was that she wanted to tell him about being pregnant. The desire to share it with him rose in her chest until she felt like she was about to burst. Then the reality: he might not feel the same way. He might feel like she was trying to trap him because she’d waited for several weeks. But if he didn’t want it, and she agreed, it was still early enough, as heartbreaking as it would be. That she felt that way was shocking in itself.

“Jake, if you’re awake, I have something to tell you.”

“Okay,” he mumbled, his eyes closed. “I’m awake.”

“Oh God, I don’t even know how to say it.”

He got up on his elbow and looked at her. The room was so dark he couldn’t see her face clearly, so he reached over and switched the light on. That she was in distress was evident.

“Geri, spill it. What’s wrong?”

“I didn’t tell you before because I wasn’t sure what I thought about it. I’m still not sure, but after tonight, the one thing I am sure about is us.”

“Well, that’s great news. Is that what you wanted to tell me?”

“No, there’s more, actually.” Kneeling on the bed with the comforter around her head like a cape, she suddenly felt vulnerable. “You love me, right?”

“I love you. I’ve told you that every day for almost three months.”

“Well, I love you, you know that, right?”

“I believe I do know that. You make me so happy.”

“But that’s not all, Jake. I’m pregnant.”

He got up on his elbow again and pulled the comforter away from her belly. One arm around her waist and she was in his arms so he could really feel her.
