“You’re still flat here,” he said, kissing her neck. Running his hand across her body, he said, “How far along are you?”
“I think it happened the first time. I thought I was safe, but I was wrong. Stupid me.”
He exposed her breasts. “Your boobs are huge, but they always were.”
“They’re definitely bigger. I’ve had some morning sickness, too.”
“Aha! So that was what that was. You weren’t sick.”
“Nope. No virus. I was just going to have a baby. So the question is, what do you think?”
She didn’t want to say,do you want it?Because she wanted it. She was going to give him the option of having an opinion just five minutes ago, but that suddenly changed. He could opt out of sticking by her if he wanted, but he didn’t get to have a say about whether or not it would be born. Because shewashaving a baby.
Grabbing her to embrace, he nuzzled her neck, smelling her like he always did, like he was a chimpanzee mother nuzzling her baby.
“I think I’m going to be a dad,” he said. “My mother is going to be so excited. I don’t even have a word for what Roberta will be when I tell her this news. And Big Mike? Oh my God, you’re like his savior and now you’re having his grandchild. Ha! I can’t wait to tell them.”
“You know, I can’t really wait either. But we should wait because it’s so early and so much can happen, but then I don’t think it’s necessary. Let them love our baby no matter what the outcome.”
“What about your parents?”
“They’ll shit,” she said bluntly. “I’m waiting a while to tell them.”
They chatted about their plans, about saving money, moving in together to make it easier, all the things that she had hoped to avoid that now she embraced. She was Jake Saint’s girlfriend, and she was having his baby. It was like a dream. Whether a good dream or bad dream was yet to be revealed. Right now, she knew they were in the honeymoon stage, where the unexpected news made them giddy and disbelieving. They were going to be parents.
“I’m starving. Do you want to grab a bite? Then if you’re still in the same mood, we’ll swing by Roberta and Big Mike’s and tell them the news.”
“I can eat, but I don’t want to make any announcements, however. I’d better jump in the shower though.”
Getting out of bed, she let the comforter fall away and walked to the bathroom naked.
“This is the first time I’ve seen you standing up bare naked. You’re beautiful.”
Holding her arms out at her sides, she looked down at herself. “I figure I’d better let you look now while it’s still just a regular body, because in a couple of months, bump! I’ll be out to here.” She held her hand out in front of her body.
Hopping out of bed, he stood in front of her and placed his hands over her belly again.
“It’s just sinking in,” he said, obviously moved by the news. “We’re going to be parents. It’s like we’re really related.”
“I never thought of it that way.”
“You seem so calm,” he said, watching her response.
“I’ve had a few weeks to think about it, Jake. I won’t lie to you, I’m scared.”
“Of what your parents will say?”
“No. I don’t even care about that. I’m nervous that everyone will expect me to change my plans. I’m not going to, just so you know. I plan on following through with everything I want to achieve, but I’ll just have a small child along for the ride.”
The wordeveryonelingered in the air like a bad smell. Jake knew she meant him.
Taking her by the shoulders, he looked into her eyes. “Understand me. I don’t expect anything from you, got it? You’ll be the mother of my baby, and I know you’ll be a great one. You’ll stay on track with your goals. I’d never ask you to change a thing.”
Listening to him didn’t change her concerns. “We can discuss this over dinner. I’ll get dressed.”
“Wow, I feel like a grown-up,” Jake said, watching her walk to the bathroom. “A grown-up man seeing a naked woman for the first time.”
“Grow up,” she said, laughing before she shut the door.
