“You want different things than I do. I’m too tired to do this anymore.”

“You sound like you might have met someone else already.”

“Ollie, I did. Nothing’s happened yet, but the desire is there. I wouldn’t disrespect you by getting involved with someone while we were still together.”

“I feel the same way.”

“And is Wendy in your future?”

“I can’t say that she is. We only talked briefly since the accident.”

“I’m surprised,” she replied. “I thought there might have been something going on before.”

“Nope. I told you there was nothing, and I’ve never lied.”

There was an uncomfortable silence when his phone beeped. He looked at the screen.

“My father is calling,” he said. “I’ll say goodbye.”

“Goodbye,” she said, and ended the call.

“Pop.”

“Are you home?”

“How’d you know?”

“Your mother said Ralph at the gate let you go through this morning.”

“I was trying to surprise you. Jeesh! Why didn’t she call me herself?”

“I have no idea. So welcome home!”

“I’m just here for the weekend, Pop. But we need to talk. I can’t stay in Michigan and do nothing. I’m not interested in coaching, and they don’t really have anything open right now. I’m sort of just hanging around.”

“It hasn’t been that long,” Charlie said. “They need to pay you for the rest of the season. Just relax.”

“Yeah, but I need to start thinking about what’s next. I need your help.”

“You’ve got it. We’ll talk later. Did you see Joanne yet?”

“I spoke with her. We’re through. She’s seeing someone else anyway, so it’s all good. It’s a relief.”

“You were together a long time.”

“It feels like she was just a placeholder. That’s awful.”

“You were both a good, safe place for two young people to be until you were ready to venture out. Don’t underestimate that.”

“I won’t. But I can see how easy it would be to end up marrying the wrong person.”

“Yep.” Charlie didn’t saybeen there, done thatlike he wanted to. No point in hurting his son. “I’ll leave now,” he said. “It’s about your dinnertime, isn’t it? We can grab dinner.”

“Okay, Pop, I’ll see you soon.”

They said goodbye. The bed was comfortable, and he pulled the covers over his body and closed his eyes. It would take Charlie almost an hour to get home, and Oliver would use that time to take a nap.

Fifteen minutes later, the dogs started to bark again. He got up, thinking it was his father, but the doorbell rang. Looking out the window, the housekeeper’s car was gone. His heart revved up a little bit. Joanne’s car was in its place.
