“I’m not sure,” she answered, grinning.

“I want to give you a bath.”

“Oh my God, you are such a romantic. Okay, I can’t think of anything I’d rather have right now than a sexy bath. How is that I deserve a wonderful man like you?”

The first time he’d arranged to give her a bath, he’d lit candles, had music playing, and used bubble bath. He’d shaved her legs too, an experience she’d never forget.

“I just want to show you how much I love you,” he said, sliding off the stool and leading her to the bathroom.

Their night had just begun, and she never thought once about Oliver Saint.

Oliver got a text message from Wendy that she could chat if he still wanted to. He brushed his teeth and changed his shirt, preparing like they were going on a date. Sitting on his bed with crossed legs and back up against the headboard, he waited for her call. Surprisingly, Sadie was sitting next to her.

“My companion wanted to say hello,” Wendy said, laughing. “She’s smashed in next to me in my recliner.”

Seeing the dog made Oliver happy. “My dad’s dogs, or I should say the dogs I grew up with, so I guess they’re mine, too, are on the bed with me. The Great Dane is Whistler, and the Jack Russells are Charlotte and Mary. Dogs, meet Wendy and Sadie.”

The Great Dane lifted his head but just barely, and the Jack Russells jumped up on him, trying to cause chaos, as Jack Russell terriers are apt to do. He pushed them off gently and stared at the screen of his phone.

“Thank you so much for the gorgeous flowers. I can’t remember the last time someone sent me flowers. I think it was a corsage for the high school prom.”

Beautiful Wendy touched a part of his heart that hadn’t been moved yet. Watching her talk, he focused on her eyes; big and luminous, they were always ready to crinkle into a grin. He remembered her smell, soft and floral, and the way her strong hands felt on his flesh when she’d wrapped the blood pressure cuff around his arm.

“Do you know what I just thought of?” he asked when there was a lull in the conversation.

“No. What?”

“Did you take my uniform off when I got hurt?”

“I did,” she said, giggling.

He rubbed his chin, grinning at her. “So you’re one step ahead of me.”

She moved her eyebrows up and down playfully. “I preserved your dignity, if asked.”

“Like I knew you would.”

They teased and laughed for the next ten minutes. Thanksgiving was tomorrow, and his flight home didn’t leave until Sunday, but now he couldn’t wait to get back.

“I’m going to try to get an earlier flight out on Friday, at the very latest. I might even take the red-eye Thursday night if I can get a seat.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because, if you’ll see me, I want to see you as soon as possible.”

“What changed?” she asked.

“My former girlfriend and I officially broke up today. And she’s already with another guy, so I’m guilt-free, footloose and fancy-free.”

“Yes, you are, and I would love to see you. However, I have to work all weekend, twelve hours a day. So why not stay there and visit with your family and come home as planned. I’ll have four days off in a row, if you can get the time off.”

“I’m just killing time right now,” he said. “My mother is on her way over, and then we’re all going to Big Mike and Roberta’s house for a pre-Thanksgiving feast later on this evening. I’ll probably be as fat as a pig when I get back to Michigan.”

They laughed and chatted for a few more minutes, and then when Wendy tried to stifle a yawn, Oliver ended the call.

“Go rest. Can I call you tomorrow night?”
