Monday night after she’d fallen asleep, Paul crept out of Emily’s bedroom to leave for home because he had to get up early for work. At dawn, she woke up, feeling his side of the bed, and sadness flooded over her. Reaching for her phone, she saw it was nearly six thirty and he’d probably be on his way in to the station.

I miss you so much. Can’t wait for the Saturday before Thanksgiving to make you mine.

Seconds later, she got an answer.

Yeah, forget it. I can’t wait. I was miserable after I left your house last night. Please move in this week.

Giggling, she quickly texted him back.Okay, whatever you say. Then her phone rang.

“Am I being too bossy?”

“Not at all.” She laughed. “Let’s live between the two houses until I sell this place.”

“Okay, deal. I’m at work. Today I’ll put our name down to rent this place for our reception.”

“And I’ll let my parents know the date. I’m sure there will be some grumbling about it happening fast.”

“Well, let me know what they say.”

“Love you,” she said. “Call me later.”

Snuggling into the bed again, she closed her eyes, fantasizing about her life. She never even imagined as a child that she’d marry someone like Paul, lulling herself back to sleep with his face shimmering in her mind.

At nine, her phone beeped, waking her out of such a sound sleep she didn’t know where she was for a second. It was her mother.

“I was going to call you,” Emily said. “We set a date.”

“Oh! Well, how exciting. When?”

“The Saturday before Thanksgiving.”

There was silence to the count of ten. “How are you going to reserve anything on base? That doesn’t give me enough time to plan a wedding. I need at least six months, preferably a year.”

“Mom, we’ve already decided to have it at the firehouse. See? It’s all done. All you have to do is help me plan the food and whatever else I’ve forgotten. I wanted to make it as easy as possible.”

“What’s your rush?”

“Simple! We don’t want to wait,” Emily said. “And we don’t want to elope.”

“Are you going to say your vows in a church at least?”

“No, no church. We are thinking of something special for our vows, and when we decide, you’ll be the first to know.”

“Let me think for a moment, then. What time will it be? I guess we should try to get together soon to map this out.”

“Mom, thanks for going along with this.”

“I would fight for a big church wedding, but I know the colonel would be on your side, so what can I do?”

“Aw, Mom, I’m sorry you’re disappointed.”

“It’s not that at all. I’m thrilled you’re getting married.”

The unspoken,I didn’t think you’d ever find someone to love you.

“Are you going to wear a proper wedding dress at least?”

“I guess I have to,” Emily droned. “I didn’t think of it until now.”
